Why is The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 split into two parts?
The Lincoln Lawyer is coming back this summer. However, the Netflix series is going to take a unique approach in dropping its season in two parts. Why is Netflix doing this odd release?
Based on the novel by Michael Connelly (which had been adapted for a 2011 film starring Matthew McConaughey), The Lincoln Lawyer stars Manuel Garcia-Rulfo as Mickey Haller, a formerly top-notch criminal defense attorney. His life takes a turn after an accident exposes his drug addiction, and he turns to work smaller cases. His nickname comes from how he prefers to work out of his classic Lincoln car rather than an office.
Season 1 focused on Haller taking on cases for a murdered colleague and soon stumbling onto a dark conspiracy. He works alongside his first ex-wife (Neve Campbell), a prosecutor, and his second ex-wife (Becki Newton), who’s his assistant.
The show was a good success when it debuted in 2022 and was renewed for a second season. This has Haller defending a superstar chef (Lana Parilla) of murder. However, its release schedule may throw off people used to binging right away.
Why does The Lincoln Lawyer Season 2 have an odd release schedule?
The Lincoln Lawyer will drop the first half of its episodes on Thursday, July 6, with the second half on Thursday, August 3. There are 10 episodes total, so this seems like a five-episode split for each half.
This is following a trend for Netflix splitting up seasons, as with the most recent seasons of You and Manifest. This seems an odd move for a steamer, but there are some interesting logistical reasons.
One may be that Netflix has come to understand that too many shows actually suffer from having a full season at once, as it’s too easy to fall through the cracks. By splitting up the season, Netflix drives up a bit more interest in the second half of episodes.
There’s also how Netflix has been losing subscribers due to its crackdowns on password sharing. By ensuring there’s a wait for a full season to finish, Netflix hopes to lure in more viewers.
Another factor is that the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike will lower Netflix’s output by the end of the year. If the Screen Actors Guild also goes on strike, all production in Hollywood will be at a standstill, and Netflix needs to spread out as much content as they have.
However it works, it means The Lincoln Lawyer gets two unique “half seasons” for Season 2, which should add to its interesting ride.
