Will there be a Season 2 of Based on a True Story?
Peacock’s new mystery-comedy series Based On a True Story has just streamed its entire first season, ending on a major cliffhanger. Will there be a Season 2 for the show?
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Season 1 of Based On a True Story
The series focuses on Nathan (Chris Messina) and Ava (Kaley Cuoco), who are struggling to pay the bills while Ava is pregnant. The two hire plumber Matt (Tom Bateman) and get along with him well. But Ava soon figures out that Matt is the West Side Ripper, a serial killer plaguing the area.
Ava then hits upon what she thinks is a great idea: Start a podcast on the murders with Matt giving his story on why he did it. They’ll then turn him into the cops and become rich and famous.
Needless to say, giving a narcissistic murderer a platform to become famous backfires big time. Not only does Matt find a way to implicate the pair if he goes down, but they also face issues such as the podcast being canceled over backlash of giving a murderer more fame, driving Matt to commit more killings to “inspire” it.
Season 1 ended on a cliffhanger as Matt killed nosy neighbor Ruby and dumped the body in Ava and Nathan’s home. They were cleaning up the blood when Ruby’s husband entered. Meanwhile, Matt was revealed to be dating Ava’s sister Tory (Liana Liberto) with the question of whether she’d be his next victim as he was planning his own podcast.
So with such a big cliffhanger, will there be a Season 2?
Is there going to be a second season for Based On a True Story?
The ending does indicate a second season is planned, but nothing has been confirmed. There are issues such as the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike that is curtailing all production in Hollywood. Another question is Cuoco, who remains busy with projects and motherhood (the actress was truly pregnant when filming the show).
There’s also the key question of how many viewers tune in. While the reviews for the show have been quite good, Peacock’s decision to release all eight episodes at once rather than weekly (as with Poker Face) hints they may think the show is better as a full binge.
As of now, there is no word on a second season, but if more viewers respond to the first season, then Based On a True Story may be able to continue its own wildly comic tale.
