It’s sad news for fans of Walker Independence. Despite hopes, the search for a new home following its cancellation seems to have ended. What will become of it now?
Debuting in 2022, Walker Independence was a prequel to the popular series. Set in the late 1800s, it focuses on Abigail (Katherine McNamara), a Bostonian woman who comes to the Western town of Independence with her husband. Her husband is murdered by a man Abigail realizes is the new town sheriff. Taking the name Abby Walker, she works to find justice, joining a mismatched crew trying to do the same.
The series had a good vibe to it and was building to a big finale. It ended with Abby bringing down corrupt sheriff Tom Davidson (Greg Hovanessian) only for him to escape and join forces with his even more brutal father. There were also hints of Abby’s destiny creating the future Walker lineage.
Sadly, the show was canceled in May, a victim of the CW’s new direction that led to the axing of scores of its original shows. Jared Padalecki had been trying to find a new home for it on some sort of network or streamer. Did he succeed?
Is Walker Independence coming back?
Sadly for fans, TVLine has confirmed from sources that the attempts to find a new home are over. It was a hard sell as a show set in the Old West required a larger budget than a regular drama and networks are tightening their belts more lately.
While the ratings were decent, they didn’t quite match the mothership Walker show. Also, the series lacked a wider audience on Netflix that other CW shows in the past have enjoyed. Despite a good fan following, there wasn’t enough interest for another network to take a shot at it.
So is this truly the end for Walker Independence? There’s a possibility that a Season 4 episode of the main Walker show may have a “flashback” story explaining what happened to the characters. Padalecki did make a cameo in the spin-off as a character hinted to be a US Marshal. That would be a good way to bring some closure to the story.
For now, fans will have to mourn Walker Independence as a show too good to last long.
