NBC has just made a decision on the future of Magnum PI. So will the reboot of the Tom Selleck series get a sixth season after all?
Premiering in 2018, Magnum PI put a new spin on the 1980s TV show that made Tom Selleck a star. Jay Hernandez played Thomas Magnum, a former Navy SEAL who now works as a private eye in Hawaii. He lives at a mansion owned by author Robin Masters with Juliet Higgins (Perdita Weeks), a former MI-6 operative, as his handler.
The show was a good success for CBS, running for four seasons, with the Season 4 finale having Magnum and Higgins finally sharing a kiss. Thus, fans were upset when CBS unexpectedly canceled it.
Thankfully, NBC stepped in to renew the show for what was announced as two 10-episode seasons. They later amended that to Season 5 being divided into two parts. Part 1 premiered in February 2023 and wrapped up in May.
Since then, fans have been awaiting not just word on when Season 5 Part 2 will premiere but also if there will be a Season 6. So what is NBC’s decision?
Is Magnum PI coming back for Season 6?
Sadly, it’s news that fans didn’t want to hear. NBC has confirmed that Season 5, Part 2 will be the final episodes of Magnum PI and there will be no Season 6.
The main reason appears to be the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike, which sees no sign of ending soon. This has limited the number of shows picked up by the networks as there’s a chance there may be no regular fall season.
There’s also the threat of an actors’ strike in July, which would forestall production even longer. Thus, NBC decided that rather than extend the options of the cast indefinitely, they would simply cancel the show.
It’s unlikely another network will step in to save Magnum PI again and so, sadly, fans must once more get used to saying goodbye to Magnum and his adventures.
