5 TV crime dramas to watch this week
The Lincoln Lawyer
Netflix drops the first part of Season 2 of the popular drama on July 6 (Part 2 premieres in August) and features lawyer Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo) handling a new murder case. That has him intrigued by a celebrity chef (Lana Parilla) while balancing things with his two exes (Neve Campbell and Becki Newton).
Expect the usual twists and turns, although with a lighter feel this time around, as Part 1 is likely to set up the big plotlines before Part 2 arrives to shift things in a new direction.
Season 2 Part 1 premieres Thursday, July 6 on Netflix.
The Horrors of Dolores Roach
Based on a popular podcast, this new Amazon Prime series stars Justina Machado as the title character, an ex-con just out of jail for drug running. Trying to get her life back on track, she hires herself out as a masseuse, only to end up killing her landlord in self-defense. She turns to help get rid of the body from chef pal Luis (Alejandro Hernandez) only to be shocked when (shades of Sweeny Todd) he turns the corpse into a new ingredient for his menu.
Expect a lot of black comedy along with some crazy turns to mark this one-of-a-kind crime thriller.
Season 1 premieres Friday, July 7, on Amazon Prime Video
Grantchester
The eighth season of the long-running 1960s-set British mystery opens with crime-solving vicar Will Davenport (Tom Brittney) accidentally causing a death. That puts him in a deep existential crisis not helped by an impulsive marriage and his pregnant wife leaving him.
Meanwhile, police detective ally George Keating (Robson Green) faces retirement amid other drama in the village. But there will be some lighter plotlines along with the usual quirky murders only Davenport can solve, yet we wonder if Will may be getting in too deep into his depression to aid others.
Season 8 premieres Sunday, July 9 at 9/8c on PBS
D.I. Ray
Making its U.S. premiere on PBS, this British crime show (now filming its second season) stars Parminder Nagra as Rachita Ray, a new detective for the London police. Investigating a supposed honor killing, she realizes the accused young man may be innocent. However, her fellow detectives (including Jamie Bamber and Gemma Whelan) are too interested in closing the case fast to listen to her suspicions, forcing Ray to go on her own to solve things.
Mixing the main mystery with discussions of race and class, this series looks to be a compelling drama on several levels.
Season 1 premieres Sunday, July 9 at 10/9c on PBS.
Hijack
For those wanting a little more action with their crime dramas, this new Apple TV+ series is up their alley. Idris Elba is a business negotiator on a transatlantic flight when it’s taken over by some terrorists. He tries to use his negotiation skills to settle things only to find the situation is more complex than it seems.
Notably, the show is filmed in “real-time,” like 24, with each episode focused on one hour of the seven-hour flight. Archie Panjabi plays the counter-terrorism expert on the ground, trying to solve things as each hour amps the thrills and Elba brings star power to the rockiest flight imaginable.
Season 1 streaming new episodes on Wednesdays on Apple TV+
