Only Murders in the Building Season 3 hasn’t premiered yet, but it’s already pulled off a big twist. One major supporting character from the last two seasons won’t be back for Season 3. Who is it, and why will they be absent?

Season 2 of the Hulu comedy ended with a one-year time jump as Charles (Steve Martin) was getting a huge break on Broadway in a new show from Oliver (Martin Short). Charles and co-star Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) got into an argument before Glenroy dropped dead on stage.

Season 3 will have Charles, Oliver, and Mabel (Selena Gomez) trying to solve the murder. This will involve some big guest stars, including Oscar-winning legend Meryl Streep.

However, it’s now confirmed that Oliver’s frenemy Teddy Dimas, played by Nathan Lane, won’t be part of Season 3. Why is this character gone from this year, and can he return?

Why is Nathan Lane not in Only Murders in the Building Season 3?

Introduced as a former friend of Oliver’s, Teddy seemed to be the laid-back owner of a chain of delis. He and Oliver had a falling out after Teddy lost millions backing one of Oliver’s shows. It turns out he’s actually running a jewel smuggling business and involved in a murder.

Season 2 had a big twist of Oliver discovering Teddy was the real father of Oliver’s son, Will. Despite the animosity, the pair still have an odd bond. Nathan Lane won his first Emmy award for his work in Season 1 and earned another nomination for Season 2.

According to Deadline, the absence is simply a scheduling conflict as Lane was busy playing the character Irving in the Broadway production of Pictures From Home. He thus couldn’t work in any appearance by Teddy.

However, Lane and producers seem open for Teddy to return in Season 4. It’s likely that Season 3 will have some mention of the character to explain why he’s not around, with the focus on a new mystery.

Thus, fans may be disappointed by the absence of Lane in Season 3 of Only Murders in the Building but hopeful he can return to his old “friendship” with Oliver later on.
