Grantchester just wrapped up its eighth season on PBS Masterpiece. But will this be the last year of the popular British crime drama, or is it coming back? Find out here!
Premiering in 2014, Grantchester is set in the fictional titular village located in Cambridge, England. It began in the late 1950s, focusing on the local detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green) as he investigated murders. He was aided by the local vicar, originally Sidney Chamber (James Norton) and later William Davenport (Tom Brittney), as they found some seedy crimes in this otherwise quiet town.
Season 8 was a dramatic one as Will blamed himself for causing the death of a motorcyclist. That put him in a tailspin, not helped by his wife Bonnie (Charlotte Ritchie) expecting a child. Meanwhile, Geordie was distracted by possibly being forced into retirement.
The finale had Geordie finally pulling Will out of his funk just as Bonnie gave birth to their son. Meanwhile, Geordie’s would-be replacement was transferred after using excessive force on a suspect, so Geordie wouldn’t be retiring after all. That seemed a good way to end the show, so is it truly done?
Is Grantchester coming back?
Thankfully for fans, Season 9 was ordered before Season 8 even premiered and is currently filming. However, there will be a big change as Tom Brittney has confirmed he’ll be leaving (perhaps in the season premiere) and thus Will will also depart the village.
Rishi Nair will join the show as Vicar Alphy Kottera, who will likely have a different dynamic but still work with Geordie to solve local crimes. The rest of the cast seems to be intact with the shift of handling this new vicar.
Filming is underway now in England, and Season 9 is likely going to premiere there in early 2024 before airing on PBS Masterpiece later in the spring. So while it will be sad for fans to say goodbye to Will, at least Grantchester itself will continue.
