The Afterparty wrapped up its second season with a fun twist on the mystery and seemed set to end. But can there be a third year for the Apple TV+ mystery-comedy show?

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for The Afterparty Season 2

Season 2 of The Afterparty had Aniq (Sam Richardson) and Zoe (Zoe Chao) attending the wedding of Zoe’s sister, Grace, and millionaire Edgar. Edgar ended up dead the morning after the wedding and Aniq brought in former cop Danner (Tiffany Haddish) to interrogate the suspects, with each one telling their story in a different genre.

After various twists and turns, it was revealed the killer was Zoe and Grace’s uncle Ulysses (John Cho). As it happened, Ulysses never meant to murder Edgar at all. Rather, he was trying to poison his half-brother Feng (Ken Jeong) so Ulysses could get with Feng’s wife, Vivian (Vivian Wu).

Speaking to Variety, series creator Chris Miller explained the idea of an “accidental murder” was the first thing the writers came up with and they built the plot from there.

"“It started with thinking that it should be poison, and then thinking that the glass of the poison goes on a journey and doesn’t reach its intended target. That would help us create a character who doesn’t have an obvious motive to kill the victim, but then we would need that character to have another secret or murder that’s intended. And what could that be?”"

The season ended with Aniq and Zoe engaged and watching Danner making a movie about Season 1’s murder mystery. So, could a third season reunite the trio?

Will there be a Season 3 of The Afterparty?

Danner making a movie could be a fun setup for Season 3 with a murder at the warp party. It could then have several of the actors (Daniel Radcliffe, Elijah Wood, Gemma Chan and others) playing versions of themselves mixed in the crime.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Miller and co-creator Phil Lord stated they never expected to do a second season of the show and had to find ways to top themselves while keeping the format intact. Miller did hint a third season can involve a wedding that becomes chaotic.

"“One wedding and a funeral, it’s called. We do have a lot of ideas for season 3, but as you know, we are in the middle of a strike. And I would hope that we can get a fair deal for the writers and actors soon, and then maybe those thoughts can become a reality: I mean, there’s a surprising amount of genres and secrets and twists and reversals and high emotion situations that we haven’t explored yet. I don’t want to spoil anything in case it does happen. But I will say that before the strike, we talked a lot about it and there’s a lot to explore.”"

Obviously, the strikes are affecting the possibility of a new season, not to mention the availability of the actors. Like other streamers, Apple doesn’t release exact viewing numbers for The Afterparty, so it’s unsure how strong the ratings are, although the show has gained terrific reviews.

However, if the show remains popular with viewers, Apple TV+ may want to keep its critical acclaim going for another year. Thus, viewers are hopeful The Afterparty won’t be stopping any time soon.
