Dark Winds wrapped up Season 2 with some bold moves for its cops. So what are the chances the drama gets a third year?
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Dark Winds Season 2
The finale had Joe Leaphorn (Zahn McClarnon) and Chee (Kiowa Gordon) realizing the mine explosion that killed Leaphorn’s son led right to millionaire B.J. Vines (John Diehl). Vines had learned the mine was sitting on untapped stores of uranium and had Colton Wolf blow it up so the value of the land would decrease and he could buy it cheaply. When Emerson felt guilty for his part in this, Vines had Wolf kill him and his son.
Vines killed Wolf before Leaphorn arrested him. When Vines was released on bail, Leaphorn decided to take matters into his own hands. He kidnapped Vines, drove him out into the middle of the desert and forced the man to walk in the cold night just as Leaphorn’s Navajo ancestors had done.
Vines was eventually found frozen to death as Leaphorn and his wife Emma moved on. Chee decided to give up being a private eye and rejoin the force while Bernadette took on a new job for border patrol.
That was a solid conclusion, but can a third season be coming?
Can Dark Winds get a third season?
Dark Winds had been successful enough in its first season that it scored a Season 2 renewal just two weeks after its premiere. In contrast, AMC has no updates on a possible Season 3.
Speaking to TVLine, executive producer Chris Eyre noted there are over two dozen books in the original series by Tony Hillerman and his daughter Anne. That gives plenty of storylines to draw from for Season 3 and beyond.
"“It feels like we’ve gotten the show on its feet. And now that it’s on its feet I want to know what happens to the characters, too. I think that their evolution could be a long time coming — and a great journey.”"
The finale had Leaphorn and Chee discovering possible corruption within the Navajo Nation government. That can play into a third season, especially with Chee once more a cop. While seasons 1 and 2 focused primarily on elements of Listening Women and People of Darkness, respectively, the second and third installments of Hillerman’s crime novels, season 3 could possibly focus on the following installment titled The Dark Wind.
As of yet, AMC hasn’t made any decision on Dark Winds, but fans are hopeful its unique criminal drama can continue to last as long as the original books did.
