As Magnum PI continues its run of final episodes, fans are hopeful it can once more be saved from cancellation. Now the show’s creator has spoken on it, but does he offer hope for a revival?

Magnum PI was a good success for CBS, a reboot of the 1980s series starring Tom Selleck. Jay Hernandez plays the title character, Thomas Magnum, a former Navy SEAL now working as a private eye in Hawaii. He’s aided by Higgins (Perdita Weeks) and other friends on his cases.

The show went four seasons on CBS, ending with Magnum and Higgins finally sharing a kiss. So fans were upset when CBS canceled it, but thankfully, NBC stepped in to renew it.

Originally set for two 10-episode seasons, it was later amended to Season 5 split into two parts. Part 1 aired earlier in 2023, but then word came that the completed Part 2 would be the end of the series.

That leads to concerns from fans on whether the season finale can work as a series finale. Speaking to TV Insider, showrunner Eric Guggenheim assured fans that there won’t be a huge cliffhanger to leave them hanging just in case it is the end.

"“There are certainly a couple of loose ends that would have been picked up in a Season 6, but there’s no major cliffhanger. No one gets shot or blown up. So I do think the finale works as a series finale. Is it how I would’ve chosen to end the series? No, but I do think it works.”"

But can this truly be the end of the series?

Eric Guggenheim on Magnum PI renewal chances

It wouldn’t be the first time that Magnum PI managed to survive cancellation to be renewed. It’s trickier now as it’s unlikely ABC or Fox would take it on after NBC and CBS passed. The idea of CBS bringing back the show it once canceled also seems unlikely.

Yet there are possibilities on streaming. Freevee is now airing the first four seasons of the series and if they become more popular, there’s a chance Amazon could take it on as a Freevee Original.

Guggenheim addressed that to TV Insider to note there is a possibility, however remote.

"“I think anything is possible. In recent years, so many shows have gotten canceled and uncanceled, or renewed and then canceled, or canceled and then revived on a different network or on a streaming platform. And we’ve obviously seen countless revivals. For now though, I’m just hoping that fans will enjoy these 10 episodes. This season was for them.”"

So, while Magnum PI fans are still hopeful the series can return once more, at least it sounds like the final episodes of Season 5 will send the series off well.
