After the winter break, 911: Lone Star is back. You can tell we’re nearing the end, as the show seems to be rushing to give everyone a happy ending.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for 911: Lone Star season 5, episode 10

The new episode was mostly focused on Judd’s recovery, which isn’t linear and requires honesty. Judd isn’t being honest, though. It turns out that he has been drinking, and now Owen has moved into Judd’s place to prevent him from being alone.

Wait, doesn’t Judd have his daughter? Nope! She’s gone to be with Grace’s parents, and that’s left an empty house for Judd. With Grace not able to talk with him much because of her mission that she feels like she’s been called to, Judd feels extra alone, and that’s why he’s turning more and more to alcohol. It also looks like he’s teetering on the edge of some very dark thoughts.

Judd looks for signs that God is on his side in 911: Lone Star season 5, episode 10

The episode itself focuses a lot on Judd looking for signs of God. He is struggling in his faith as well as his sobriety, with a message to Grace failing to go through. He text her a 911 asking her to come home. It wasn’t until the end of the episode that we saw the message did eventually go through and Grace was able to reply, offering Judd a chance to speak with his wife. It was exactly what he needed.

But up to that point, we got to see him struggle with his faith. God was seemingly abandoning him, and it’s something that many people of any faith can go through. They start to feel alone. I’m always reminded of the story I was told as a kid of Jesus and the footprints in the sand. So many people forget about that as they feel so alone.

When the pastor who runs the AA support group is involved in an accident and is close to death, Judd feels even more that God isn’t there for anyone. He gets a reprieve when Owen and the rest of the 126 are able to bring the pastor back.

My issue with this storyline is that it only lasted an episode. This is something that could have done with more time to explore and develop. I do feel like 911: Lone Star is trying to put too much into the final season, and with just two episodes to go and a major world-ending event to come, the series needed to step back or better plan for some of this.

Marjan’s surprise wedding in 911: Lone Star season 5, episode 10

Meanwhile, we have a surprise wedding. Honestly, I’d completely forgot about Marjan’s boyfriend. This was something that felt completely off, making it clear that the series is just trying to quickly give everyone a happy ending.

I did enjoy seeing Marjan able to stand up to her parents. It took a call to a woman allowing her sister to walk all over her and almost end up with chemical burns for Marjan to see that she needed to live her own life. That meant making it clear to her parents that she was ready to marry, and she wanted to do it with her parents in town.

This could have been a much bigger storyline over the course of the season. We could have done with a reminder that the boyfriend existed up to this point in the season. Like I said, I completely forgot he was in the picture, and I had to go online to remember how they met and who they were. It’s a failure in the writing, to be honest.

I would have loved for Marjan and her parents to have more of a conversation leading up to it. Marjan’s mom is surprised that Marjan is willing to rush the wedding because she wants a big one, but it’s something that we could have done with knowing before all this.

The fact that it was in the firehouse was a great touch, but this meant nothing to Marjan’s now-husband. TK and Carlos got an amazing buildup to their wedding, and I do think that Marjan deserved the same. It's that reminder that there have been so many underused characters in the series, especially when it comes to these personal storylines.

Overall, the episode didn’t have many memorable call outs. This was very character driven, but it just reminded us that 911: Lone Star is rushing the stories to bring the series to a close. I don’t know how to feel about that right now, but I think it’s going to make for a disappointing end to a fun and energetic show.

911: Lone Star airs on Mondays at 8/7c on FOX. Catch up the following day on Hulu.
