The third and final part of the major opening arc of 911 season 8 was a thrilling adventure that showed just how special the relationship between Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) and his wife, Athena Grant-Nash (Angela Bassett), truly was. The love between the couple was palpable from beginning to end, starting with the attempts to land the plane to the moments when Athena let go of 30 years worth of anger.

As the episode began, Athena attempted to give CPR to the co-pilot who suddenly had a heart attack before he barely came to after losing consciousness. While other passengers aboard the plane worked to keep him alive, Athena went back to the cockpit to try and land the plane with the help of Jem, the young boy who knew a lot about planes.

How do Bobby and Buck help Athena and the passengers in 911?

The ATC did their best to help Athena land the plane in the air. However, with the plane unable to turn, it meant she wouldn’t be able to safely land at LAX, which is where the 118 and other LAFD crews were waiting to provide aid.

In the meantime, Bobby managed to get ahold of Athena and he made sure to stay on the line with her as he prepared to clear the 110 highway so she could land the plane. With Buck (Oliver Stark) working to stop the rest of the cars from driving on the highway, Bobby stood on top of the firetruck to wait for Athena.

Incredibly, Athena was able to land the plane with Jem’s help, saving all of the passengers on board. This episode really made work of some incredible cinematic shots, from the plane flying over Buck’s head to the shot of the firetrucks coming to help save the passengers and provide aid.

Athena may have landed the plane, but she still has a job to do involving Dennis

It was an incredible hour of television that also showed how far Bobby was willing to go to help Athena, such as when the FBI agents arrived looking for Dennis. Bobby managed to create a rouse that they were going to the hospital, but instead, Dennis had them go to the airport parking garage. The little black book Fulton had was located in a classy red car.

Unfortunately they were followed by one of the agents, who Athena suspected was in the book that they discovered. He attempted to shoot Bobby, but Dennis got in the way. Thankfully, the makeshift shiv Dennis had made to help save a passenger came in handy to stop the agent from trying to shoot at them again.

At the end of it all, Athena told Dennis that he didn’t have to reject the deal, since he said he would only take it with her blessing. She no longer wanted to hold onto the hurt over what happened with her fiancé Emmett all those years ago. It was an incredible moment of growth for Athena as she watched him reunite with his family.

Honorable mentions

  • Even though the bees have appeared to disperse, we have to admit we’d still love to at least get another mention of them later. However, no one has to worry about being stung.
  • Hen, Chimney, and Eddie just patiently waiting for the plane. They were the epitome of confusion in not knowing what was happening since Buck didn’t have a radio on him.
  • Chimney makes a quip about the situation with Buck and Gerrard. He briefly brought it up to Bobby, but then decided against telling him what happened. We imagine he’s having too much fun keeping that tidbit to himself!
  • The nod to Oliver Stark constantly surprising fans over being British. We love a show going meta in their own show also going meta in real life.
  • That awkward hug between Buck and Gerrard. We wonder if Buck is beginning to regret ever saving him. Would being suspended from work be preferable? We have a feeling Buck feels that it would be.
