We finally know which Blue Bloods star will be joining Donnie Wahlberg on Boston Blue and it’s a big one!
Spinoffs of hit TV shows can be tricky to pull off. Fans of the original have to feel a connection to the main series and not just use the name with almost no connections to the original (see the short-lived Suits: LA).
CBS has had success with that with the NCIS and FBI franchises. They’re hoping this can hit again with Boston Blue, the spinoff of the long-running Blue Bloods, due to premiere this October.
Bridget Moynahan will appear in Boston Blue
The series will have Donnie Wahlberg taking his Detective Danny Reagan from New York to Boston. There, he’ll partner with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) who, like the Reagans, comes from a prominent law enforcement family. The pair will work cases as Danny learns more of the complex Silver clan.
TVLine has now confirmed that Danny isn’t going to be the only Reagan in Boston as Bridget Moynahan will be appearing as his ADA sister Erin for a fun cameo!
What other Blue Bloods characters can appear in Boston Blue?
Moynahan and Wahlberg broke the news of the appearance with a photo of the pair on set in Toronto (which is standing in for Boston). It’s now confirmed that Erin pops up briefly in the series premiere.
This will make Moynahan the only other Blue Bloods cast member besides Wahlberg to be appearing in the new spinoff. There will be another character in Danny’s son, Sean, who’s now a rookie patrolman in Boston. However, Andrew Terraciano, who played the role throughout the series, decided not to return for the spinoff. Thus, Mika Amonsen will be taking over the part.
It sounds like Erin is only making a cameo, likely to help explain Danny’s move to Boston to be closer to Sean. It’d also be nice if we got an update on Erin as Blue Bloods ended with her and ex-husband Jack making a go of it again getting married.
Moynahan will also direct at least one episode of Boston Blue. Her appearance gives hope that other Blue Bloods actors can pop into Boston Blue as well. It’s natural that Jamie (Will Estes) would drop by the city to check on his brother. There’s also a chance Frank (Tom Selleck) could appear at some sort of police conference as an excuse to see his son. Also, it’d be great if Danny’s partner, Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), would come in for a reunion (and a potential romance).
The producers no doubt hope Moynahan’s appearance will bring in more Blue Bloods fans and provide more of a link between the two shows. If this means more Reagans pop in, then Boston Blue can satisfy the fandom nicely.
Boston Blue premieres Friday, Oct. 17 at 10/9c on CBS.
