CBS just made a big decision on the future of Matlock, so will we get more of Kathy Bates’s amazing attorney at work? What do you think?

Usually, TV networks wait until the spring to hand out renewals or cancellations for their programming. CBS is different as the network has already given renewals to several shows like FBI, Fire Country, Boston Blue and Sheriff Country. It’s a good way for the network to stay on top of things and lets the showrunners know where things are going.

Will Matlock season 3 happen at CBS?

As part of a wave of renewals of a whopping 10 shows on Thursday, Jan. 22, CBS confirmed that Matlock will return for season 3. The surprise hit continues to rake in viewers in its sophomore season and has averaged 4.85 million viewers per TV Series Finale, making it a standout show.  It is the #1 drama on Thursday nights, according to CBS.

The series has been surprising from the start. Loosely based on the 1980s show, Oscar-winner Kathy Bates played Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a sharp lawyer who joins the work force of the Jacobson Moore law firm. Matty quickly proves she still has her skills as an attorney, putting people at ease with her charm.

The twist? Matty is actually a rich woman going undercover to find out who at the firm buried files proving the addiction of opioids, which could have saved the life of Matty's daughter, among countless others. That’s led to Matty in a strange partnership-turned-contest-turned-partnership-again with Olympia (Skye P. Marshall).

Season 2 has kept up the fun drama and some turns that the rest of the year will have to address.

What’s coming when Matlock returns?

The series is currently on a break until Thursday, Feb. 26. When it returns, it’ll first have to pick up on the mid-season finale cliffhanger: Just as Matty and Olympia were celebrating getting proof on Senior (Beau Bridges) covering up the files, Junior (Jason Ritter) had followed them and learned they were working together.

The show is also going to have to address the sudden departure of Billy Martinez. The popular character was last heard of helping his girlfriend cope with a miscarriage. The reality is that David Del Rio was fired after accusations of his assaulting co-star Leah Lewis, who plays Sarah Franklin.

The coming episodes will have Edwin Hodge (Marshall’s real-life husband) guest-star as a charming doctor, Sarah Wright Olsen as an efficiency expert, and Henry Haber as Hunter, a younger associate who’s likely going to fill Billy’s place working alongside Sarah.

The renewal makes fans wonder how the main storyline will unfold as season 2 seemed to be building to Matty finally exposing Jacobson Moore. It’s uncertain how the show can continue with the possibility it settles into Matty staying with the firm amid other turns.

However it goes, fans can be assured that Matlock is set for a third season to continue its fantastic run as a hit show packed with twists!

Matlock season 2 returns on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 9/8c on CBS.
