When it comes to broadcast TV shows, we’re used to them coming back in January. The earlier the better for many networks, although CBS has held off to the end of the month in the past. Well, CBS is holding off until a later month, with Matlock season 2 on the list of many other crime dramas that won’t return in January 2026.
As ABC and NBC released its January schedules, CBS opted for a completely different one. At first, it hurt knowing that we would have a long break. But then we looked at the reason behind it, and to be honest, we’re on side with CBS for holding on bringing shows back.
Why isn’t Matlock season 2 coming back in January 2026?
Matlock season 2 is being held until February. We’ll get new episodes on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 9/8c, with the entire Thursday night lineup returning as expected. Sure, it hurts at first, but we have to remember that CBS opted to push its shows into the middle of December, while other networks aired fall finales back in November!
The wait is simple: the Winter Olympic 2026 Games. While CBS won’t air the Games, NBC will, and to go up against the sporting event is suicide for most TV shows. Matlock could probably handle it, but is it really worth the risk? Not at all!
Couldn’t CBS bring the show back in January for a few weeks and then bring it back after the Games? Well, sure, other networks are doing it, but do we really want another break in the schedule? Waiting until the Winter Olympic Games are over is best. Plus, there will be another break coming when March Madness starts, so more consistency is better.
What to expect when Matlock season 2 returns
The show ended on a high note for Olympia and Matty’s friendship. It seems that they are on the same page finally. However, they will need to keep working together if they want to avoid problems with Julian.
After his dad suffered a stroke, Julian was able to slip an earbud into Olympia’s purse. He now knows everything that Olympia and Matty have been working on together, and he knows that he is at risk if the Wellbrexa documents get out. Sure, right now, they want to take down Senior, but he may not survive this stroke. Then it puts Julian back in the firing line.
Matlock season 2 will return on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 9/8c on CBS. For now, catch up on the series via Paramount+.
