Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Chicago PD season 12, episode 9.

The promo for Chicago PD season 12, episode 9 made it clear that two kids would be kidnapped and there would be a ransom on their lives. Well, there was a lot more to the story.

Officer Cook quickly jumped into the action on this case, and she ended up becoming the one needing to get answers. We knew she would turn to family to get help, so why would she need to do that when her dad runs a store?

Much more to the kidnapping in Chicago PD season 12, episode 9

The episode picks up with Cook witnessing a car accident. A man was racing through an intersection, only to crash the car and eventually die of his wounds. However, he lived long enough for Cook to learn that he had to deliver money to a specific location because of a kidnapping.

His wife and children had been kidnapped that morning. Travis didn’t have the money, so he called his brother to ask for it. It was clear that Travis’s lifestyle would come into the story. Travis had a gambling problem and made some bad investments, but he was keeping up appearances. Even his wife didn’t know how many money problems he had.

It would lead to a nightmare for his wife. Intelligence initially found her finger with ring on Travis’s desk, and then a video came through to his phone, making it clear that the kidnappers had no idea that Travis was dead yet. They were no longer messing around, and they shot the wife on camera. By the time Intelligence got to the location, the wife had bled out.

The kidnappers had managed to get away with the kids, though. It was back to the drawing board.

Voight runs into a problem with Chief Reid in the Chicago PD season 12 winter premiere

Voight turns to Deputy Chief Reid to help get the girls back. They need cash to pay the ransom and get the kids. There’s only so much Reid can do, but he does agree to help in another way.

This is how Cook’s family comes into play. She needs to turn to her mom to get the cash. It’s personal, which the department wouldn’t usually allow, but Reid is able to do it.

We get a great look at Cook’s home life. Her mother is a piece of work. Cook hasn’t seen her mom in three years, and it’s clear that her mom looked down on Cook being in patrol. Her mother has a condition on loaning the money. Cook will need to attend a charity gala where her whole family will be. Cook isn’t going to say no when the lives of two girls are on the line.

I don’t think this is the last we’ve seen of Cook’s mom, but I hope she doesn’t show up too often. Cook is a great young woman despite having a mother like that. You can tell that her dad has had a lot of influence. Money does horrible things to people.

Intelligence fight to save the girls in Chicago PD

What surprised me about this whole thing is that the kidnappers didn’t know anything about Travis being dead the whole episode. It made it clear that the kidnappers weren’t the most switched on people. The guy on the phone didn’t even realize it was Adam on the phone with him rather than Travis.

However, they were switched on enough to get rid of the bag and took the cash. They knew that the bag would have the tracker in. With Adam getting an address for Voight to go to, and Adam and Burgess on the tail of the van, there was hope that the girls would be found alive.

The kidnappers weren’t as dumb as they originally seemed. The house Voight went to had a camera. They knew there were cops on the case, and they just needed to prove it. Now all hopes rested on Burgess and Ruzek following the van with the men who took the cash.

Of course, the girls weren’t in the van. With one of the guys shot dead, they needed to get answers from the other guy. Well, this is where the plot thickens. It was never Travis that the kidnapping was for. It was because the wife was having an affair with one of the guys, and she chose her husband. Cook was able to get the guy to talk, threatening that he’d be in Gen Pop with “child killer” on his back. With some by the book pressure, Cook got answers.

I’ve got to say that I enjoyed seeing Cook be the one to get answers. We got to see her interrogation style, and we could see that she was passionate but also calm. She stayed focused on getting the answers she needed, and I’m excited to see more of her as she continues to be a part of the team.

The question was whether they would get to the girls in time. Once she was able to calm down after not initially seeing the girls, she could see there was another space in the house. Now my heart breaks for these two little girls who will have to grow up without either of their parents. Getting the girls back was a win, but it’s not a full win. At least they will have family via Travis’s brother.

There are clear signs that Cook’s family will come up again in Chicago PD. We learn her grandfather wants to be alderman, and there is enough to understand that he could use Cook for that. However, he didn’t want Cook to be born. She was the product of a one-night stand and her dad ended up raising her. I adore that her dad stepped up and we see that not all Black men are deadbeat dads.

Cook ended up walking away from the party that she promised to go to. That’s sure to come up against her at some point when she needs something from her mom again.

Chicago PD airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
