Chicago PD season 12 is taking its first break of the season

After five episodes, Chicago PD is heading on a short break. We have some good news about the show when it returns, though.

It’s time for a break in the One Chicago schedule. Chicago PD, along with the other two shows, are heading into their first break of the 2024–2025 season.

This is disappointing to fans, but it’s not unusual. The good news is we have an end date for the break, and we know what to expect.

Chicago PD is only off for a week

There won’t be a new episode on Wednesday, Oct. 30. The good news is the show is only taking one week off. The promo for the next episode came out straight after episode 5. We know that we’ll get an episode on Wednesday, Nov. 6.

There is some good news in the promo for the episode. Burgess is up for a promotion to detective. This is something that we suspected could happen when Burgess was away on a conference for a couple of episodes. Martel made it clear that this conference could open the door for the promotion.

However, it’s clear that there is one hurdle in the way. Burgess needs to go through a ride along to prove that she is suitable for detective. We know that she is, but it’s always worrying as one bad case could mean a delay in people achieving dreams. We’re sure that this case is going to be anything but routine.

Why is Chicago PD taking a break?

Of course, fans want to understand the reasoning behind the break. It’s always disappointing when there isn’t a new episode.

NBC has to fit in 22 episodes of a show into nine months to fit the fall starts and spring finishes for the regular TV season. That means breaks have to happen here and there, and NBC is strategic about that.

On top of that, there are production issues. While the season starts with some episodes in the can, the entire season hasn’t been filmed in the way that it is with streaming or cable shows. So, that means the episodes aired can catch up to the episodes ready for distribution, leading to breaks in the schedule.

This break could be a mixture of both of these issues, but it’s more likely linked to scheduling for May finales considering there is already a promo out.

Chicago PD airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
