Why is Burgess still gone in Chicago PD Season 12? (Is Marina Squerciati leaving?)

Kim Burgess hasn't been around for the first two episodes of Chicago PD Season 12. Where is she, and what does this mean for Marina Squerciati?

Kim Burgess has been MIA in Chicago PD Season 12. That’s despite everything her fiancé Ruzek has been going through. What’s going on? Where is the character?

Marina Squerciati’s character has been mentioned but not seen. Does this mean she’s leaving? It could actually mean something great for her story in the future.

Where Burgess is in Chicago PD Season 12

The good news is that Burgess isn’t leaving Intelligence. Ruzek shared during the Chicago PD Season 12 premiere that Burgess is away at a policing conference. There were questions about whether she would leave early due to the drug case that was playing out in the premiere, but Martel encouraged her to stay.

There was a clear hint at what this policing conference could do. Martel shared that it might “give her a leg up” in Intelligence.

When she does come back, we're hoping to see her grieve the loss of Martel as well. Ruzek made it clear that Burgess knows Martel and they were all friends.

Is Burgess getting a promotion in Chicago PD Season 12?

We have waiting a long time for one of the officers to be promoted to detective. Showrunner Gwen Sigan told TV Insider that “someone’s getting promoted” during the new season, and now we have to wait for who that it.

There are two characters I would like to see promoted: Burgess and Atwater. This whole storyline seems to hint that it’s going to be the former.

Why isn’t Marina Squerciati in the first two episodes of Chicago PD Season 12?

What’s with Squerciati missing the first two episodes of the season, though? This is likely liked to the show looking for ways to cut the cost of production.

During Season 11, we saw episodes where not all characters were around. They would be off on furlough, or they would be dealing with another situation. Sometimes, their disappearances wouldn’t even be mentioned, with us just accepting that they were gone for an episode here and there. We were warned this would happen so that the show could save money.

Well, it looks like this is happening again. Burgess being missing could be used in the future as a storyline to see her promoted. In the next episode, we may see her back but with someone else not around. Expect this now and then for various characters throughout Season 12.
