When we saw the promo for Chicago PD season 13 episode 4, we knew that the photos linked to Voight’s past in some way. However, what we ended up learning wasn’t what we were expecting.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Chicago PD season 13 episode 4.
The episode starts as a normal day, for the most part. The only difference is that Voight calls Imani over for gun recertification. Both of them have to do it, so they might as well get it out of the way. However, things take a turn when Voight sees an envelope on his car.
Imani immediately asks questions as she sees the photo of a bruised young boy in what seems to be a hospital bed. Voight is silent, though, as they head toward the training center. They don’t get a chance to get there, though, as there’s an armed robbery happening that Voight and Imani end up responding to.

An offender with remorse in Chicago PD season 13 episode 4
During the armed robbery, we learn that the offender took a victim, Raina, to a clinic to help save her life. This is unusual, even for Voight, and it kicks off a storyline about nurture vs. nature. Are we all born in a certain way?
The case isn’t an easy one to crack, although Intelligence know that they’re on the hunt for Gary Bell, the son of the now-bankrupt billionaire Bell patriarch. There are many twists and turns as Intelligence tries to get to the bottom of the situation, especially when it turns out that Gary will injure the hands of his victims, breaking all the tiny bones. Burgess is sure that this is part of a bigger thing, as the hands contain a large number of the total bones in the human body.
Things take a darker turn when Voight and Imani track down Gary. Gary hits him over the head, but then he immediately starts to apologize. He keeps telling Voight, “he made me this way” and that he was “born good,” and now he doesn’t want to keep doing the things that he does.
Voight is desperate to save this young man, but it’s too late. He dies by suicide, just as Imani walks into the room.

There’s something going on with the Bell family
Voight knows that he needs to see Raymond Bell, Gary’s father. Imani also points out that she wants to see Gary’s daughter, Julia, as well, who is with Raymond. It’s clear that something is going on here.
As Voight tells Raymond about Gary, there is no emotion. Voight even tells Raymond that Gary said “he made me this way,” and it still doesn’t warrant any emotion from the man. If Voight knows anything, he knows when people are off in the way they act. Voight knows that there is something going on in that house, and he’s sure to keep an eye on it.
This could turn into a season-long arc, or it could be something that’s wrapped up by the fall finale. That’s not clear, as there is a bigger arc to focus on right now.
It’s all about that photo. Imani took another look at it, and she realized that the uniform worn by the cop in the mirror of the photo is an old one from the 1970s. I think we all assumed that the boy was a victim from Voight’s past, but it turns out that that boy is Voight. We’re about to get a backstory we’ve needed since Chicago PD began.

Meanwhile, we get to learn a little more about Imani, as Voight was impressed with how easily she seemed to navigate the NA meeting she went undercover in during the episode. It turns out that her sister had a dark past that involved narcotics, and Imani had to navigate NA meetings from the age of eight. This is sure to link to her choice of work, but also her need to keep moving, as she’s likely only ever relied on herself. I’m looking forward to learning more about Imani.
