Every now and then, the characters on our favorite TV shows think about what it would mean to leave the job and the city they’re in. It’s only natural, as many people think about that in real life. In Chicago PD season 13 episode 5, it was Atwater’s turn to consider it.
During the bombing case, Atwater reconnected with a friend from the Police Academy, Officer Fox. He learned that Fox was leaving Chicago for Miami, escaping the cold, harsh winters, and just getting a new start in life. At first, Atwater couldn’t even consider leaving, noting that Chicago is his home.
However, Atwater has always put other people before him. He’s now dealing with his dad, his siblings, his tenants, and the Intelligence cases. So, Fox got him ot think about himself. What would it be like to start over?

Is Atwater leaving Chicago PD?
With a question like this, there is a concern for Atwater fans that we’ll be losing him soon after Chicago PD season 13 episode 5. Not only did Fox tell Atwater that he needed to start thinking about himself more, she invited him along for her adventure. What if he moved to Miami with her?
Then there was a steamy scene at the end of the episode, almost hinting that Atwater was considering it. However, by the very end of the episode, it looks like Atwater is staying.
After all, Fox had left the next morning, making it clear that maybe she didn’t really mean the invitation. It was one of those wishful thinking moments, knowing that Atwater wouldn’t leave things behind.
So, as of right now, there’s no need to worry about losing Atwater from Chicago PD.

Atwater could probably never leave Chicago
Let’s be honest, though. When it comes to Atwater, do we really see him leaving Chicago?
This is a character who has a lot of roots in the city. It’s where he’s grown up, and it’s where his father is right now. He has his tenants and a job that he does love, even if it wears him down now and then.
In the end, Atwater never really showed any signs of thinking of leaving the city. There is always that “what if” moment, but Atwater is a man who doesn’t want to uproot everything in his life.
What this storyline could offer is a chance for Atwater to really think about himself. It’s time for him to put himself first now and then, whether that means making it clear to his dad that he can’t drop everything for him, or whether it means having a conversation with his siblings about them picking up some of the slack.
This is an arc that needs to be developed more throughout Chicago PD season 13. After all, out of all the characters on the series, Atwater is the most underused with the least development, and it’s time to focus on him better.
Chicago PD airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
