The promo for Chicago PD season 13 episode 6 told us that Torres would end up pulled into a conspiracy. And a conspiracy it was! How did the episode play out?

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Chicago PD season 13 episode 6.

Torres has still going through a crisis of faith, and he’s still struggling to sleep. That is clear at the beginning of the episode, as he wakes up in bed just watching the fan, with the woman from the bar a few episodes ago in bed with him. It looks like things are still hot between them, but how long can that last with Torres’s mental state?

The next day, Torres is on an errand for Trudy Platt when he’s hit by a vehicle. It leads to him being held hostage by an escaped inmate, who says that he didn’t do the crime he was convicted, and he needs Torres to help prove that.

Torres wants to help an innocent man in Chicago PD season 13 episode 6

It turns out that this is genuinely a case of an innocent man convicted for a crime, and it’s the biggest reason I refuse to support the death penalty — and not just the fact that it actually costs more for someone on Death Row than it does for life in prison, but that’s a side part.

Let’s just focus on this particular case. The man, Odell, shares that he was convicted of murdering his wife, but he didn’t do it. His brother lied on the stand, and that’s what led to him being sent down.

Odell didn’t actually think about escaping prison that day, but a crash made it possible for him to do so, and now he wanted to get to his brother to find out why he would lie. Well, it’s clear that someone made his brother lie on the stand, and there is a much bigger conspiracy going on. Torres wants to help clear Odell’s name, but there is a snag in the entire thing.

Odell succumbs to his injuries from the crash

Throughout the episode, Torres wanted Odell to get treatment for the wound he sustained in the accident, but he is, understandably, too focused on getting a chance to prove his innocence. However, he’s bleeding out like crazy, and it’s not surprising that by the end of the episode, he collapses in a parking lot.

Torres didn’t get in touch with Voight, Burgess, and the others, but it isn’t too hard for them to follow the trail of destruction, and when they see Torres helping Odell into the car, they know that they can now follow him thanks to traffic cameras.

Sadly, Torres doesn’t manage to save Odell’s life. As the Intelligence Unit arrives, Odell passes out, and he ends up flatlining on the way to the hospital. It’s a devastating moment for Torres, and it’s surely only going to add to his crisis of faith. After all, how can he have faith in a justice system that is broken?

To make matters worse, it’s going to be harder to clear Odell’s name. His brother, Carter, who was finally willing to tell the police everything, is shot and killed by a sniper who was clearly watching Carter’s house.

Chicago PD season 13 episode 6 ends with Torres going to see Odell’s adult daughter, who has always believed her father killed her mother. She now gets word that her father was innocent this whole time, and it adds another layer of heartbreak to the story. Torres is going to reopen her mother’s case, but he needs her help to do it. It’s time to get justice for the entire family in Odell’s memory.

Chicago PD airs on Wednesdays at 10/9c on NBC.
