Finau wants to get his family out of Los Angeles, but they don’t quite pay attention in Countdown season 1, episode 9. It puts their lives on the line.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Countdown season 1, episode 9.

Of course, we have to open with Blythe, as at the end of Countdown season 1, episode 8, he was left for dead. Did we really think Eric Dane’s character would die? Definitely not, and we get to see that he’s able to push through the pain to call in for backup.

That gets him to the hospital, where he’s able to pull through surgery. Of course, he doesn’t want to stay in the hospital, and makes it back to the office to find out what’s going on.

The task force finally get a break in the case in Countdown season 1, episode 9

While the task force has had a few of Volchek’s identities up to this point, a lead helps them get to one that they desperately need. They manage to get to the couple who forge the documents, and the man is more than happy to sing like a canary for immunity. That’s what the task force is willing to offer, as well.

So, with that, they get the final identity for Volchek, but it’s a popular name in Belarus. Think of it like John Smith to us, so it’s not surprising that there are multiple businesses in that name. There’s one that stands out to Meachum: Kestrel Productions.

Wasn’t that the name of the parking garage? Sure enough, and Kestrel is the national bird of Belarus. You would think that Volchek would avoid that, but he still has a heart for his home country, even if it’s abandoned him. The office itself is nothing, but Meachum, again, figures out what Volchek can do.

Production companies are always blocking streets with their vans for filming. They just need permits from the city, and it doesn’t take long to track down a permit that just happens to connect with Finau.

Finau races to save his family in Countdown

During this episode, Finau had told his wife to get their daughters and leave town. It’s time to visit family elsewhere, but his wife points out that their daughters have the poetry field trip. This is not the time to argue, and you would think that she’d listen to her husband, right? He works in law enforcement, and he’s working on some secret project. Couldn’t she put two and two together?

Instead, she decides that her daughters can do the poetry trip, and that just happens to be where Volchek is heading with his trucks. Finau is in a bit of a panic, but he remains calm up until he sees his daughter on the stage.

The trucks are filled with nuclear bombs, and Finau needs to do what he can to get his family out. So, he gives away that the police have turned up. Sure, it gets people out, but it also alerts Volchek and makes it harder for the task force to find him.

As for Volchek, he has remained in the area. He knows that it will be a death sentence for him, but he wants to see the panic as the bombs go off. Shepherd figures out how to potentially disarm the bombs, though. Realizing that they are set up with some sort of app, she realizes that she and Bell can likely just disconnect the consoles and that will stop the feed to the bombs.

Will it work? At the very end of Countdown season 1, episode 9, Meachum and Volchek see each other, and Volchek pulls out his phone to ignite the bombs. We’ll need to wait until the next episode to find out what happens.

Countdown airs on Wednesdays on Prime Video.
