We are certainly more than ready for Jensen Ackles to take the lead in another show. There’s been a lot of hype around Countdown on Prime Video, and now we have more details about the series.
Countdown wrapped production back in March 2025. If you were like me, you probably expected a late summer/early fall premiere date. However, Amazon has surprised us all with how quickly the post-production happened, with the show arriving early summer!
Countdown release date on Prime Video
The new crime drama will arrive in time to help us get through the summer hiatus from broadcast shows. Countdown premieres on Wednesday, June 25, with three episodes dropping at once. Yes, this series is getting a similar release structure to Reacher, and that makes sense considering how great that release structure has worked for that show (and many others on Prime Video).
After this, the episodes will release once a week on Wednesday. TVLine states that the finale will air on Sept. 3, which is a Tuesday rather than a Wednesday. This could be a typo, or it could be that Amazon is switching nights for one episode only; that’s hard to tell. Either way, the planned finale date will be in time to give us a couple of weeks off before the fall 2025 schedules on broadcast start. I’d say this is pretty well thought-out for Amazon.
How many episodes are in Coundown?
Based on the premiere and finale plans, there are nine episodes in the first season. This is an odd number for a Prime Video series, but we’re here for it! Most have eight, and the odd show has 10. However, there are some changes right now for various shows across streamers and on Prime Video, with The Last of Us season 2 having just seven episodes and The Summer I Turned Pretty season 3 getting 11 episodes. It’s hard to keep track now!
Along with Ackles, we’ll see Eric Dane, Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, and Elliot Knight star in the series. It’s set to be a crime series with a serialized storytelling element, which again, is very much like Reacher and Cross, and this is working for the streamer right now.
What is Countdown about?
While we’ve heard a lot about the Supernatural vet starring in this new series, there’s been little about what it’s about. Well, now we have some details.
LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles) is recruited into a secret task force when an officer in the Department of Homeland Security has been murdered in broad daylight. Various agents from other branches of law enforcement are pulled into this secret task force, and they will need to hunt down a killer before a more sinister plot is enacted. Can the undercover agents save millions?
Countdown premieres on Wednesday, June 25 on Prime Video.
