There has been one slow-burn romance that we’ve waited patiently to see happen. It’s all about Bensler in Law & Order: SVU.
Once Christopher Meloni left the series, it seemed impossible for the relationship to happen. However, things changed when Law & Order: Organized Crime was developed, and that introduced more crossover moments between Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson.
Yet, the two have not officially got together. There have been a couple of cute moments and there was that near-kiss, but Law & Order: SVU has seemingly decided that Bensler is not going to happen, and I don’t think that is going to change in season 27.

Christopher Meloni will be back in Law & Order: SVU season 27
We now know that Meloni will reprise his role of Elliot Stabler in Law & Order: SVU season 27. It’s become pretty standard now to see either Stabler in SVU or Benson in Organized Crime, and we’re not complaining. With each appearance, there is hope that we’ll get the Bensler relationship that we’ve patiently waited for.
However, I doubt it’s going to happen. One of the things about this slow-burn romance is that it keeps us tuning in for each crossover moment. We’re constantly looking out for signs that they are going to get together.
The more we’re left waiting, the more we tune in for the next episode. Of course, eventually, that gets old. However, the Dick Wolf franchise doesn’t do enough crossover moments to really make us angry.

The Law & Order relationship doesn’t seem to work
It also looks like it’s not the writers who aren’t interested in bringing us the relationship. Nor is it the fault of Meloni. He would love to see it happen, and that’s why they tried it. There was that near-kiss, but in the end, it wasn’t something that worked for the show.
It sounds like it’s Dick Wolf who doesn’t like the idea of the kiss, according to ScreenRant. He’s the one who keeps saying no, and maybe it’s because he wants to keep this will-they-won’t-they going. It’s also possible that he fears them getting together will change too much of the show.
There are no signs that his opinions have changed, but we don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes. However, I’m not getting my hopes up for Bensler to finally happen. There have been too many times there’s a hint of it and then nothing.
Law & Order: SVU season 27 will premiere on Thursday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c on NBC.
