Grantchester fans just got some great news (that is ultimately sad)

11 is grand.

Fans of the Kudos and Masterpiece-produced crime drama Grantchester are likely currently enjoying the 10th season of the series. Every Sunday brings us another crime, probably a murder, and the odd combination of detective and vicar take to their heels to resolve the situation.

Is the village of Grantchester, England, a bit too small for some many violent crimes, and would residents move from the area? Sure, but the only real connection from episode to episode is the relationships between the main characters.

You know, just like every other brilliant show.

And as you are a fan of Grantchester (unless you stumbled across this article somehow and opened it thinking, What could be great and sad at the same time?), you should know Masterpiece recently gave you some excellent news. There will be an 11th season arriving.

Grantchester season 8

Grantchester fans learn the fate of their favorite crime drama

Here is the sad part: It will be the show's last season.

Filming for the final season will begin in July, with the expectation that the new season will begin dropping next June. This is the way the show has worked for 10 years, through one detective (Robson Green's Geordie) and three different vicars. Wait until summer and then watch the duo find criminals.

According to a release from PBS, Grantchester season 11 will find the current vicar, Rishi Nair's Alphy, finding out more about his past life. In season 10, we found out that Alphy had grown up in an orphanage and found his way into a religious calling. In the next season, Alphy will learn what else he might have been.

Geordie will seemingly finally get a chance to be the man in charge, but that means leaving his crime-fighting days behind and, therefore, the relationship he has built with the vicar.

The secondary characters on the series, such as Geordie's forgiving and elegant wife, Cathy (Kacey Ainsworth, Leonard (Al Weaver), the well-groomed curate who breaks the social norms of the 1950s and early 1960s, and Mrs. Chapman (Tessa Peake-Jones), the caretaker of the rectory who can be stern and understanding, are excellent, the series succeeds because of the interactions of the vicar and detective.

Does it always make sense for the duo to team up on crimes? Of course not, but viewers are glad they do. Plus, Green and, especially, Nair have turned the characters into dynamic individuals, and must-watches.

Who knows how season 11 will end, and the wait will likely be worth it, but perhaps Geordie goes off to hunt vampires and Alphy learns to drive in Formula One. That way, Grantchester fans are left asking, "What?"
