It looks like the new boss on High Potential has more in common with Morgan than she expects ,and could lead to new directions.
High Potential was one of the biggest new hits of the 2024-25 TV season. The ABC remake of a French series took off with viewers loving the story of Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson), a single mom working as a cleaning lady at the LAPD who shocks the cops by solving a crime with ease. Possessing an 160 IQ, Morgan is a genius with a quirky mind that aids her in becoming an LAPD consultant.
The show was a huge success, with High Potential season 2 ready to keep it going. That will include Morgan facing off against the Game Master (David Giuntoli), a serial killer who challenges her and might cause more friction between Morgan and the cops. That will include a new boss who will challenge Morgan in other ways!

How do Morgan and her new boss get along in High Potential season 2?
Joining the series for season 2 is Steve Howey as Jesse Wagner, the new precinct captain. While Selena Soto (Judy Reyes) believed in Morgan’s talents from the start, her superiors are often doubtful about a cleaning lady with a messy history aiding the cops.
Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Todd Harthan shared that Wagner will have his own strange attitude that will throw even Morgan off-balance.
“[Wagner is] a little bit hard to read, a bit of an enigma. It’s tricky because he comes in and is assumed to be a threat. He’s their new boss. What’s his agenda?”
This would be a refreshing change from the cliche “tough new boss” who enters a cop show and throws his weight around. Wagner might be more open to Morgan and her ways to let her go about on cases while she and the other cops wonder just why he’s giving her so much leeway.
It does sound like Wagner is interested in Morgan’s skills, perhaps to poach her for another unit. Of course, there’s also buzz on him becoming part of an office love triangle with Morgan and her partner Karadec. However, after way too many bad romances, Morgan is against the idea of sleeping with the boss.
“You know Morgan’s point of view on bosses, so if that happens, it’s going to be tricky and laced with landmines. But unexpected chemistry is interesting to me.”
The series will put an overdue focus on the other cops of Daphne, Oz and Soto and the hints that we’ll see Morgan’s long missing ex Roman (perhaps played by new guest star Mekhi Phifer). This is more proof High Potential sees plenty of potential in season 2 being better than the first to entertain fans.
High Potential season 2 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 10/9c on ABC.
