High Potential season 2 episode 7 recap: A twist we all saw coming

The art heist investigation brought a very standard TV storyline.

Usually, High Potential is able to bring some intriguing cases, even when they do end up being relatively easy to solve. However, the High Potential season 2 fall finale made things a little too lackluster with the twist that we could all see coming a mile away.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from High Potential season 2 episode 7.

The start of the episode involved an art heist, and sure enough, a $20 million Rembrandt had been stolen. This brought in an art recovery specialist, who had been brought in by the insurance company so that the insurance company could avoid paying out.

Well, immediately, my spidey senses tingled. Why did nobody check this guy’s credentials? What was it with just believing this guy, who anyone from Britain could have told you was frorm the poorer end of London just based on the accent?

Is Rhys really Jean Baptiste in High Potential?

It turns out that a thief has managed to steal multiple paintings in the past, and all of them are worth around the $20 million mark. The theft is with high precision, with the name Jean Baptiste being shared around.

However, there was one time when the thief was unsuccessful, and he was shot in the shoulder by the security guard at the time. Sure enough, when Morgan and Rhys are together in the hotel room, Morgan finds that Rhys has a scar on his shoulder that would match being shot there.

So, it appears that Rhys is Jean Baptiste, and if this is the way High Potential is going to go, then it’s not that surprising. It puts the suspect in on the case, which helps him stay one step ahead and feel part of the search.

I need to see a twist on top of this twist. High Potential has always been good at keeping me guessing a little, but this second season has been a little lackluster with some of the bigger storylines, especially the Game Master arc.

What is Wagner doing?

During High Potential season 2 episode 7, Wagner chews Morgan out in front of everyone for being reckless when she goes back to the crime scene with Rhys. It’s completely against protocol, and he’s done with it. To be honest, I don’t blame him for chewing her out for breaking protocol and potentially affecting the evidence, but he shouldn’t have done it in front of everyone.

It’s clear that he’s struggling with this position, though. This is a man who likes control. He wants to know where everyone is so that he can protect them. At least, that’s what he tells Karadec.

I can’t tell if this is something bigger in a bad or a good way, as I would love to see the entire “bad boss” arc turned on its head with Captain Wagner.

Soto looks through Roman’s bag

Meanwhile, Soto is on a mission of her own, with the rucksack that belonged to Roman. She goes through all the evidence, and she ends up calling Daphne and Oz in on the search, telling Wagner that it’s a cold case. To be fair, she’s not lying when she says it is a cold case, as Morgan did report Roman as missing back in the day.

It looks like she may find some sort of clue. There’s a photo of a bearded man in the bag, and sure enough, we cut to Arthur, who had called Morgan at the start of the episode about being tailed by someone. It’s not the cops, so who is it?

Well, it turns out that it’s the bearded man. What was Roman up to, and what has he managed to get Arthur involved in now?

Will Arthur be safe since he no longer has the backpack that this guy wants? Will he managed to meet up with Morgan and Ava to tell them about Roman? All of this will need to wait for High Potential to return in 2026.

High Potential is available to stream on Hulu.
