As we near the end of another season of Found (and we’re still hoping for not the final season), we take a look at how far some characters have come and what is still in store for them. Karan Oberoi talked with us about Dhan, including him finding that special person in his life and his focus on figuring out who Jamie really is.

Dhan is one of Gabi’s team, and he is the one who will do all the dirty work that’s needed, including helping to abduct Sir and even be willing to kill him. When he learned what Gabi had done, he didn’t blink an eye in protecting her, and he’s helped to keep the team together since the secrets came out.

We discussed what it’s been like to play this character, a focus on found family, and Dhan’s need to figure out who Jamie really is.

Karan Oberoi talks Dhan’s light in the darkness in Found

Precinct TV: I love Dhan’s connection with Gabi, but also that with Ethan. Can you talk about him finding a balance between these two people in his life?

Karan Oberoi: Yeah, I think for Dhan, family’s first, and this team and Gabi have given him so much security, as has Ethan, so this is truly a balancing act. He understands where Ethan’s coming from, and he understands the team needs him as well. The team cannot fall; we do really important work.

I think Ethan understands that too, which is why he gives him a little bit of a break. He’s like “do what you have to do.” I think Ethan has an understanding of who Dhan is — the job comes first, type of guy — and gives him space to be with Gabi.

PTV: There’s an important line that Dhan says to Zeke, about when you find that someone who understands you to hold onto them. What was it like for you reading that script for the first time and see what Ethan means to Dhan?

KO: Dhan’s past has so much darkness to it. When he got this light, which happened to be Ethan, you know, most people would push that away and think maybe they’re not deserving of it, but Dhan said “No, I am deserving of this, and I’m going to accept this relationship and I’m going to work on myself.” I think he was telling Zeke that they have the same thing. If there’s somebody out there telling you that they love you and they want to help you, it’s important to explore that more and not push it away because you’re scared or you don’t think you deserve it.

PTV: I love how the M&A family supports each other. They accept the flaws from the trauma, but at the same time, support their willingness to improve and change. What has that been like for you to show this on screen?

KO: I think it’s just that: family. We understand that about each other. We’re all a work in progress. Everybody is, and this team is so tight-knit and they’re dealing with such high-strung situations that attribute in PTSD. Fears are gonna pop up, and we all understand that about each other and give each other grace and space to deal with that while we’re doing the challenging job of finding all these missing people.

I think the fact that these people give each other the time and allow each other to be is just the simple reason that we all get along so well, and we can do our work so great.

PTV: I found myself relating to Margaret so well when she was considering taking her own life, and you became this light that she needed. It was so heartwarming to see Dhan not judge, but to make it clear that he needed her, too. What was that like for you and Kelli to bring that storyline to screen?

KO: Kelli is a great, great, great person. She’s a great actress.

Dhan just has that connection with all the characters. This has been his challenge this season, to be there for everyone. This team is his family, so when they hurt, it’s like a part of him hurts. If they’re not okay, then he’s not okay, and he will go to great lengths to make sure that he can resolve it.

With Margaret, there’s just a special connection. Margaret sees Dhan like everyone else, but she can see the truth, and I think she gives Dhan a lot more grace for who he is.

PTV: Let’s talk the Jamie situation. Dhan is saying everything we were thinking from the start.

KO: Yeah!

PTV: There’s a moment where Dhan realizes that Jamie is Jamie. What was that like for you to read the script and see Dhan accept that this is really Margaret’s son?

KO: There’s a captivity issue with both of them; they have that in common. I think Dhan can understand that. With wanting to pry as much as he wanted to but allowing Jamie the space to do it himself, but Dhan also has his resources. He’s going to get answers, and I think he had some answers before. I think he could see how much Jamie cared, and that was just an instinctual thing for him.

PTV: We haven’t had the DNA test results back yet, though. Can you tease anything about those? Does Dhan need them anymore?

KO: Dhan is going to follow through with this. He’s gonna follow through on this job, so I think we’re gonna get answers to that really shortly.

PTV: Nice. The synopsis for Found season 2, episode 20 had be curious. Found is, for me, one of the most important shows on TV right now. What makes it important for you to keep telling these stories?

OK: Just the basic premise of everyone deserves to be gound. We’re dealing with some very complex issues in America and the world, and I think the fact that we’re bringing this to light is just important work that the show is doing.

I think we need more of this. The emotional impact, the PTSD of each character, how we all need to be kind to each other and understand each other. There are just a lot of things about this show that it needs to be on the air more.

There’s the procedural aspect to it, but we just have so much unique storytelling to it. It’s just so much fun, and it has like nine different things going on. We are so grateful to tell it.

PTV: Is there anything that has surprised you about Dhan?

KO: Oh, surprised me? I think for this season, there’s a level of calmness, which I didn’t think would play with all the stuff that was happening. He’s pretty restrained this season. Obviously, we see him lose a little bit in the next episode or so, but he had a lot of restraint, and I give him a lot of credit, because a lot went down with the security of M&A, Gabi, Lacey, so much happened. I think that was the biggest thing for me to explore this season, and that was very interesting to me.

PTV: I love how he stepped up as the leader, the glue for the team, while everyone else turned against Gabi.

KO: Yeah, Gabi’s important to him, and I don’t think there’s a thing in the world that she could do where he’s going to walk away and turn his back on her. Not at all.

Found airs on Thursdays at 10/9c on NBC.
