The Law & Order shows aren't new tonight (and we have a long wait for episodes)

Thursdays are supposed to be about the Law & Order shows, but there's some bad news tonight, Thursday, May 22.

Thursday nights start off with two hours of Law & Order drama. We get the flagship series and then an hour of SVU. However, there is some bad news tonight, Thursday, May 22.

There isn’t a new episode of either of the shows tonight. In even worse news, there isn’t even a rerun. NBC will air two hours of a Canadian medical drama, which is sure to give you an idea of what the rest of the bad news is going to be.

Why isn’t there a new episode of Law & Order or SVU on tonight?

As mentioned, we’ll get two hours of Transplant season 4, the Canadian medical drama focused on a Syrian refugee who manages to land a job at a hospital after saving the life of the Chief of Surgery by performing brain surgery in the middle of a fast food joint! Considering there are still more episodes to come, it does tell you that we’ll be without the Law & Order shows for some time.

The truth is, the series is now on its summer break. The season finales aired last Thursday, May 15, bringing us some major moments. Now eyes are on when the two shows will come back.

Law & Order franchise will return in the fall

In some good news, both of the shows have been renewed for the 2025–2026 TV season. NBC has also made it clear that the shows are performing well, with them return on Thursdays in the fall. They’ll kick off the night, with The Hunting Party now following them in the last hour of the night.

When will that be? Well, we have to wait at least four months. Yes, the summer hiatus is always a long one, but this gives the writers time to write episodes and then for production to start. NBC hasn’t set the premiere dates, but we know that a lot of shows return in September on this network. Sometimes, they’re held for early October, but hopefully, that isn’t the case here.

Law & Order and SVU are both available to stream on Peacock while we wait.
