Law & Order SVU season 27 is happening (but we have a long wait)

Summer hiatus has officially started, and that means a wait for Law & Order: SVU season 27.

The summer has started. Law & Order: SVU season 26 came to an end last night, Thursday, May 15. This is always the worst time of year for fans.

In some good news, there will be another season. Just ahead of the NBC Upfronts, Law & Order: SVU season 27 was confirmed, along with season 25 of the flagship series. We will get at least one more season, and now we have an idea of how long we’ll need to wait.

Law & Order: SVU season 27 will premiere in the fall

NBC’s fall schedule looks very similar to previous seasons. Thursday nights will be all about crime dramas, starting with two hours of Law & Order drama and then running into the sophomore series The Hunting Party.

The decision to keep Law & Order: SVU in the fall isn’t surprising. It remains one of the most popular shows on the network, helping to keep Thursdays in contention against the likes of ABC’s TGIT lineup and CBS’s comedy and then drama blocks.

Of course, the downside is that we have to wait. Right now, we don’t have a premiere date, as all the networks will hold off making those decisions for a little longer. We’re used to seeing NBC shows come back in late September or early October, but there have been times we’ve had to wait a little longer. We’re looking at September 2025 for Law & Order: SVU season 27.

There are changes coming to Law & Order: SVU

The 27th season will see some changes, with one of those being the first time a woman is in charge of the series. How will that change the tone of the show? Probably very little, but it is a historic moment.

Another change is the loss of two series regulars. Octavio Pisano and Juliana Martinez are leaving the series after three years and one year respectively. Losing two series regulars at once is a bit of a shock, and we hope to see some sort of exit storyline crafted for them.

Other changes could involve shortened seasons and characters missing from episodes here and there. This is a way to keep the costs down, although the great thing about SVU is that despite it going into its 27th year, it’s still one of the lower-costing shows, especially within the Dick Wolf universe.

Law & Order: SVU is available to stream on Peacock.
