The Matlock season 2 premiere did not disappoint. It picked up shortly after the events of the season 1 finale, and we saw a world of lies come out from various people.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for the Matlock season 2 premiere.
The first episode aired on a special night, and you’ll want to catch up on it. Matlock season 2, episode 2 will air on Thursday, Oct. 16. Keep that in mind as we delve into the events of the premiere episode.
We ended the first episode with two main cliffhangers. The first was with Olympia, who learned that Julian had hidden the documents and now she needed to decide whether she was turning him in or not. The second was a man turning up claiming to be Alfie’s biological father.

Matty deals with Joey’s appearance in Matlock season 2
Of course, Matty is skeptical of Joey at first. He may have an iPod that belonged to Ellie back in the day, but there’s nothing just yet to confirm the man is Alfie’s father. He probably doesn’t even know, either. After all, he says that while he and Ellie were in love, he didn’t know that she ended up pregnant.
As Joey says that he’s been clean for two years, he agrees to a DNA test, and Matty runs it. We do learn that Joey is Alfie’s biological father, but he did lie about something. He’s not as clean as he says he is, and this could lead to more trouble for Matty and her family.

Olympia lies to Matty in the Matlock season 2 premiere
Meanwhile, Olympia is telling her own lies. She claims to Matty that Julian wouldn’t keep the damning documents, and she’s sure that Senior did it. There was an unnamed woman who went on the trip to mee the Big Pharma people, so maybe this woman knows something.
Olympia decides that she’ll look into that, while she also gets a safe installed so that she can keep the damning documents safe.
Matty wants to go to the press to expose the firm, knowing what this means for everyone else. Olympia tries to hold her back from that, continuing her search for the mystery woman. To get the information about the mystery woman, Olympia needs to go through Senior’s Rolodex to find the number of the flower shop that he always uses.

That means Matty needs to distract Senior, and what better way than to confront him about the way he treats Julian. Senior points out that he can ruin her law career, and gloats how the laws don’t touch people like him.
Finally, Matty is able to get the name of the mystery woman: Deborah Palmer. Matty also managed to distract Olympia and faked a phone call to be able to snoop in the safe, getting the documents, so that she can use them for herself. She’s ready to go to The New York Times!
There is a case in the episode, and while it helps to create the distraction of a fire to help use as evidence, it’s not all that compelling for the episode. However, the episode does see Billy confirm that he is the father of Claudia’s unborn child, and they decide that they want to raise the baby together. Considering David Del Rio has just been fired after accusations of sexual assault against Leah Lewis, this is a way to quickly and quietly write him out of the show.
Matlock airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS.
