Matlock is taking a break tonight, and here's when you can tune in for a new episode

CBS is seeing a small change in the programming tonight, Thursday, Dec. 19. There isn't a new episode of Matlock, but we know when the series will return.

We would love to jump straight into a new episode of Matlock tonight, Thursday, Dec. 19. After all, there’s still a lot of ground to cover, especially with things that Matty has learned recently. There is some bad news, though.

There isn’t a new episode of the series on tonight. CBS is opting for a slight change to the schedule. While Ghosts will get two episodes and there will be a new episode of Elsbeth, both Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage and Matlock aired their winter finales last week.

It’s not too surprising with Matlock. We have to remember that this series debuted in September for an airing that arguably helped to promote the series. This led to a second season renewal, but it also meant that Matlock was an episode ahead of Ghosts and Elsbeth. So, that means an earlier break.

When will Matlock return with new episodes on CBS?

The good news is that this break isn’t too long. It’s a little more than a month, with CBS confirming that Thursdays will return to normal on Jan. 30, 2025. Yes, the entire Thursday night lineup will be back as we’re used to, with Matlock airing at 9 p.m. ET/PT.

We don’t have details on what to expect just yet, but that’s not surprising with the length of the break. We’ll get to know closer to the time, but there is still plenty to cover.

What we do know is that the series is looking at bringing some Ellie flashbacks. This will help to add more empathy for the character and her family. We’ll get to see what the opioid crisis did to her, and we may see how the law firm is actually to blame. Humanizing the victims is so important for the story to add empathy. We need to be shown and not told.

A Guy Named Greg
“A Guy Named Greg” – Matty’s rusty trial skills are put to the test during a wrongful termination case by a woman claiming she was sexually harassed by her boss. Also, the firm’s jury consultant and master lie detector, Shae (Yael Grobglas), joins the case, on MATLOCK, Thursday, Oct. 24 (9:01-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ (live and on demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the

Why is Matlock on a lengthy break?

Of course, some people will wonder what the reason for this break is. As mentioned, Matlock going on a break earlier than Ghosts and Elsbeth isn’t that surprising considering it was an episode ahead. Now Matlock and Elsbeth can wrap up their full seasons at the same time.

This particular break, though, is linked to the time of year. The cast and crew take time off, so there won’t be as many episodes banked for January. The linear ratings take a dip this time of year, so it makes sense to take the break now. Why risk a good show due to the season?

Matlock returns with new episodes on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 9/8c on CBS. Catch up on the series on Paramount+.
