Matty put her rusty trial skills at the test in Matlock season 1, episode 4. However, it looks like this led to her learning more about Olympia than she expected.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for Matlock season 1, episode 4.

Matty did go into her mission to take down the law firm in a bit of a naïve way. She was sure that she could go in and quickly find the information she needed. The problem is that’s never the way it works. Even if this wasn’t a TV series, it wouldn’t work all that quickly.

Of course, she would end up forming bonds with various members of the law firm. That wouldn’t be too bad if it was with the other associates, but the latest episode saw her and Olympia almost becoming friends.

Olympia shared more about her personal life in Matlock season 1, episode 4

In the new episode, Matty realizes that she needs Olympia’s laptop. There isn’t any time to be able to search the whole device while Olympia is in court, but she has a plan. She can put in a decoy that she spills coffee all over, making it impossible to get any information back.

Olympia noted that there was something that she didn’t back up, and Matty immediately wondered if that something was linked to the investigation Matty is into. It turned out that it was a little more personal.

During the episode, Matty mentioned how the judge was a former Marine and didn’t have much patience. Olympia stopped in her tracks, but it wasn’t because Matty seemed to know about the judge. It was because it reminded Olympia of her dad, also a former Marine.

Well, that’s what the non-backed up item was. It was a voicemail from her dad, and likely the last one ever. It’s clear that Matty feels bad for taking Olympia’s laptop with this recording on it. There’s no way to get that recording back to Olympia without exposing what she did and what she’s up to.

The episode ended with Matty reminding herself that they are not friends. She’s on a mission, and she can’t let emotions get in the way. However, it’s clear that this could be the downfall for Matty. Things are certainly harder than she initially anticipated.

Matlock airs Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS. Catch up the following day on Paramount+.
