Kathy Bates is back in action, playing Madeline Matlock in the new Matlock reboot. She makes it clear in the first trailer that you can’t underestimate her.

At first glance, it appears that Maddie is just bored of retirement. Or maybe she really does suddenly have a 12-year-old to raise and needs money. However, with how in tune to the world Maddie is, all that of that seems unlikely. She is up to something bigger.

Never underestimate Maddie in the Matlock trailer

The first full trailer for the new CBS series is out. She has some jokes, but she also makes it clear who she is. She is a woman who will use her age to her advantage. Everyone believes that she is a bumbling old fool, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. She pays attention to the world around her, and she uses that to get herself hired.

As she points out in the trailer, being an old woman is a superpower. She becomes invisible, but she’s got a head on her shoulders. She shows them all how to play everyone at their game, including making prisoners think that she’s an aunt they’ve forgotten.

The end of the trailer makes it clear that she wants to work at the prestigious law firm for another reason, though. She is after an old case file, and it’s likely something personal. Could this be to find someone who killed someone close to her? Could it be her own case file that she doesn’t want anyone else to find?

The best thing is, Maddie has warned people not to underestimate her. She’s told them what their superpower is, and it seems like only one person is even considering to take her statement at face value. Only one makes it clear that she doesn’t trust this elderly woman looking to get back into the world of work.

Take a look at the trailer and get ready for Matlock on Sunday, Sept. 22.
