NCIS: Origins ratings are in and they're not as good as NCIS: Hawaii

NCIS: Hawaii fans kept saying that canceling the series was a big mistake. The live ratings for NCIS: Origins are in, and the Hawaii fans were right!

As an NCIS: Hawaii fan, I knew that canceling the series was a mistake. Would the NCIS: Origins live ratings hold up against the show? It turns out not.

I love NCIS: Hawaii for a multitude of reasons. The characters are real, and we have this wonderful lesbian couple to get behind. There was clearly so much more to come, whether it was to meet more of Boone’s family or to get to see Kate and Lucy continue their journey of love. And yes, we wanted to see something in the love department for Ernie—there is a girl out there for him.

Yet, the series was canceled—and we at Precinct TV still say it was for a ridiculous reason. The reason has come out to be even more ridiculous when you consider the NCIS: Origins live ratings.

NCIS: Origins live ratings are down from NCIS: Hawaii

According to TVLine, NCIS: Origins debuted with five million viewers and a 0.3 demo rating. That is just down from NCIS: Hawaii’s same day ratings from its third season. Hawaii sat at 5.2 million viewers and a 0.35 demo rating.

Now, TVLine does point out that NCIS: Hawaii didn’t go up against Monday Night Football last season, while NCIS: Origins did. It was also a thrown off season with the premiere happening in the new year instead of fall, so does it really count as being fair? Okay, so let’s look at a season that did go up against Monday Night Football.

We can look at TV Series Finale for that. We’ll work with the fall season for NCIS: Hawaii as it’s a fair matchup against this series premiere. The premiere of NCIS: Hawaii season 2 saw 5.3 million viewers and a 0.4 demo rating. Putting premieres that air around the same time up against each other is the more fair option to compare the shows. At least, in my opinion it is.

We’ll see how NCIS: Origins continues to perform, especially once it moves into its regular 10 p.m. ET/PT timeslot rather than a two-hour slot. It will be interesting to see if CBS made the mistake Hawaii fans think it did.

NCIS: Origins airs Mondays at 10/9c on CBS. Catch up the following day on Paramount+.
