Netflix is turning one of its biggest movie franchises into a TV show and they just landed a fantastic lead actress for it. Natalie Dormer is joining a crime drama you can't miss.

Netflix is no stranger to its various TV franchises, from Stranger Things to Bridgerton. They’ve also branched into several original movies, many of them action films with big-name stars and creators behind them.

Netflix is now joining the trend of expanding its movies into TV shows. They already did so as their To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before film trilogy spawned a hit comedy series XO Kitten. Now, the streamer is prepping Extraction, an upcoming series based on the 2020 and 2023 Chris Hemsworth movies.

Natalie Dormer joins the cast of Extraction

The series will come from superstar producers Joe and Anthony Russo, who also wrote the movies and will be helmed by showrunner Glen Mazzara. The series had already cast Omar Sy in the main role, and now Deadline reports that Natalie Dormer is joining as the female lead.

Per Deadline, Dormer plays "Clayton Whisper, the leader of a private military contractor.” The actress broke out playing Anne Boleyn on The Tudors and then the prime role of Margaery Tyrell on Game of Thrones. She also had a memorable turn as Irene Adler/Moriarty on Elementary and the drama White Lies.

Dormer's presence promises to add more thrills to a show that already looks like a top action entry!

What is Extraction about?

Extraction premiered on Netflix in 2020 and is based on a graphic novel by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, and Anthony Russo. Directed by Sam Hargrave, the movie starred Chris Hemsworth as the leader of a black ops mercenary team whose mission to save a drug lord’s kidnapped son goes awry. The film became a hit on Netflix, praised for its amazing action sequences. That naturally led to a 2023 sequel that was also a hit.

The new series is set in the same universe and with Omar Sy (who starred in the Netflix smash Lupin) as a mercenary sent to rescue hostages in Libya. Per the description, trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, he must navigate life-or-death choices while confronting deep emotional wounds. Extraction explores the trauma, betrayal, and moral conflicts of characters pushed to the edge.”

Dormer should provide some great spark to the series. The actress is used to action from earlier roles and can bring both a steely edge and some allure to the part. She and Sy are likely to clash as rivals for a bit in the series as they each carry out their own missions with a question of whether Dormer is more good or bad.

It’s still going to be a while before the series reaches Netflix, with more castings to be announced, yet Dormer alone makes Extraction one to watch out for when it reaches Netflix.

Extraction and Extraction 2 are available to stream on Netflix.
