The season 3 finale of Will Trent left Michael Ormewood in a dangerous spot so what can happen to him in Will Trent season 4?
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for Will Trent season 3
Since Will Trent began, Michael Ormewood has been one of the show’s top characters. The tough Atlanta cop is often partnered with Angie (Erika Christensen) and enjoys his time as a dad and a cop. Jake McLaughlin has imbued the character with great heart and spirit to become a key part of the show.
That’s why fans are worried about Ormewood’s fate, given how the season 3 finale of Will Trent has put him in a very tough spot!

What happened to Michael Ormewood in Will Trent season 3?
Season 3 of the show had Ormewood dealing with his wife Gina filing for divorce and now a single dad. It gave Ormewood more growth as a character, facing up to his troublesome attitude in the past and a sharper cop.
Ormewood was concerned when he started having mental lapses, mixing up words and collapsing on the job. A checkup revealed he had a brain tumor, forcing the man to face his own mortality. While he sought treatment for it, Ormewood wasn’t sure if he’d go for a dangerous surgery.
The Will Trent season 3 finale had Ormewood aiding Faith in trying to get a needed cure to a biotoxin threatening Atlanta. That involved a wild shootout and the unlikely help of a pack of teenage archers.
It seemed to end okay but in the final scene, Ormewood suddenly collapsed at his home. Thus, fans are worried that he’s facing his end.

What’s coming for Ormewood in Will Trent season 4?
Speaking to TV Insider, McLaughlin admitted even he’s not sure what Ormewood’s fate is going to be but is hopeful he’s coming back.
“I don’t know what’s going on. I don’t. They won’t tell me what’s happening next season. I think [Michael will] be okay-ish… but like I said, we just ended the season, so I don’t know what my destiny is going to be, what’s in store for me … maybe the road to recovery, maybe not. I don’t know.”
It will be a long wait to find out, as Will Trent season 4 won’t air until early 2026. There’s no word on McLaughlin leaving the show, so hopefully, this is just a brief health scare, and Ormewood is back on duty fast.
If he does return, it’s very likely that his brush with death is going to seriously affect Ormewood’s outlook. On the one hand, it may make him more introspective and haunted, wary of risking himself. It’d be fun if it somehow bonded Ormewood and Will with their quirky views of life.
On the flip side, Ormewood may embrace a “live each day like your last” attitude, more free-wheeling, which could risk himself way too much in the field. It may also jeopardize his relationship with his kids not wanting to lose him so soon.
It does sound like Ormewood will be back for season 4 one way or the other. The question remains how healthy he’ll be both physically and mentally but either way, it won’t be the same detective we know on Will Trent next year.
Will Trent season 4 premieres on ABC in 2026.
