We're now waiting for a renewal update about Countdown on Prime Video.

Wednesdays have been taken over by Prime Video’s newest crime drama, Countdown. The previous episode ended with a major cliffhanger, and there’s no doubt that you’re likely getting ready for a new episode airing on Wednesday, Sept. 10.

We have a lot of bad news about the series so far. There isn’t a new episode airing, and there won’t be one for some time. In fact, there may not be a new episode of the crime thriller.

Countdown season 1 has come to an end

The previous episode was the Countdown season 1 finale. The major cliffhanger was done on purpose, as a way to encourage Amazon to renew the show. At the same time, it gives us a lot of questions that make us want more. We’ve got the encouragement to tune in if the series makes a return.

In a way, it’s disappointing, though. We know that there’s a huge risk in doing this, and it is about time that storytellers stop doing this sort of thing. The streamers (mostly, although network channels are bad for it too) are quickly and abruptly canceling shows. If there’s no guarantee of more, then the cliffhangers need to be intriguing, but not leave us with major questions about the current storyline.

Yet, Derek Haas is doing what has happened with a lot of One Chicago shows in the past. Of course, those shows were usually renewed way ahead of the finales, or there was pretty much no chance that NBC was going to cancel them because they are the top-rated shows on the network. It was a major cable on Prime Video, especially considering On Call was recently canceled.

Could Countdown season 2 happen?

We’ve already looked into this, and we are on the worried side. If Amazon has a hit, it will renew a show quickly. We’ve seen the likes of Reacher and Jack Ryan renewed early or just after new episodes have dropped. Cross was renewed for season 2 ahead of season 1 even premiering. The streamer knows when it has a hit.

So, the fact that after 13 episodes Countdown still hasn’t been renewed is worrying. It suggests that Amazon isn’t that happy about the performance, but it will see what the uptick is like now that the whole season is available. I just think we’re going to end up with a cancellation decision.

Countdown is available to stream on Prime Video, and you’ll want to binge-watch and get friends to binge-watch to make it clear more is needed.
