Only Murders in the Building season 5 is coming closer than expected, yet also a bit later than fans are used to. We share what we know so far!
Only Murders in the Building has become one of Hulu’s best original shows. The comedy has excelled thanks to each season showing the incredible chemistry of self-absorbed actor Charles (Steve Martin), even more egotistical Broadway director Oliver (Martin Short) and troubled artist Mabel (Selena Gomez) who run a podcast exploring murders in their posh New York apartment building, the Acordia.
The show has been a big favorite with critics, including numerous Emmy award nominations. Each season has boasted a plethora of amazing guest stars, including Oscar-winning icon Meryl Streep as Oliver’s actress girlfriend Loretta Dunkin. It’s no surprise it got a fifth season renewal, which will be coming a bit differently on the calendar than fans are used to!
Why is Only Murders in the Building season 5 starting late?
A special online announcement confirmed that the first three episodes of OMITB season 5 will premiere on Hulu on Tuesday, Sept. 9. Episodes then drop every week with the season finale on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
This is different than usual for the series. Season 1 did premiere in late August 2021, with season 2 dropping in June 2022. Seasons 3 and 4 likewise premiered in August, so an early September start is later than usual for the show. That puts it up against the premieres of many network shows.
There are a couple of reasons for the delay, mainly the busy schedules for the three leads, which required some waiting for Martin, Short, and Gomez to finish other projects. That also counts for the various guest stars, especially Streep, so production on season 5 didn’t begin until March of 2025.
What to expect in Only Murders in the Building season 5
As usual, the season picks up right where Only Murders in the Building season 4 left off, as Lester, the beloved doorman of the Arconia, was found murdered. Meanwhile, the trio was approached by Sofia Caccimelio (Tea Leoni), the wife of “laundry king” (and suspected mobster) Nicky “The Neck” Caccimelio, to find her missing husband.
“Charles, Oliver and Mabel’s investigation into Lester’s death plunges them into the shadowy corners of New York and beyond, where the trio uncovers a dangerous web of secrets connecting powerful billionaires, old-school mobsters, and the mysterious residents of the Arconia. The trio discovers a deeper divide between their storied city they thought they knew and the new New York evolving around them — one where the old mob fights to hold on as newer, even more dangerous players emerge.”
There will be plenty of past faces popping up in season 5: Streep, Nathan Lane returning in his Emmy-winning role of Teddy Dimas, Jane Lynch (the late Sazz Pataki), Richard Kind (Vince Fish) and James Caverly (Theo Dimas).
Besides Leoni, new guest stars include Emmy-winner Bobby Cavanale, Keegan-Michael Key, Logan Lerman, Jermaine Fowler and Oscar winners Christoph Waltz, Dianne Weist and Renée Zellweger.
With such a huge cast, fans shouldn’t be too upset Only Murders in the Building season 5 airs a bit later than usual as the showrunners are no doubt going to make the wait more than worthwhile.
