It's disappointing news for Dead Boy Detective fans

It is disappointing news for those who loved Dead Boy Detectives. The series has been canceled by Netflix after just one season.

TVLine broke the news before the month of August came to a close. It comes months after the season dropped on Netflix, which in a way, makes it unsurprising news. If we haven’t heard about a renewal within a couple of months, it usually means that a series has been canceled. It’s rare that a streamer will take a few months to discuss storylines and land a renewal.

It comes off the back of a few disappointing cancellations on streaming platforms later, and not just in the crime drama genre. Prime Video fans learned My Lady Jane has been canceled after one season, while Disney+ decided not to renew The Acolyte for Season 2.

Why is Dead Boy Detectives canceled?

Netflix hasn’t stated the reason for the cancellation, which leads us to believe that it is financial. This is a series that is expensive to make. There is a lot of CGI in place, and there are some period costumes needed, which will boost the cost of production up.

If there weren’t enough people watching the series, then Netflix wouldn’t want to risk the cost of the show. Sure, it seems like a lot of people were watching the show based on social media, but how many individuals actually binged from start to finish? Netflix doesn’t release the numbers, so we can never tell.

What does this mean for the characters in Dead Boy Detectives?

The series is set in the same world as The Sandman, and there is some good news about that series. A second season of that has been picked up. So, it does bring hope that we will get a little closure somewhere. Maybe an episode of The Sandman could connect back to the Dead Boy Detectives finale.

There are a lot of questions about whether Niko would remain dead or not in the second season. She died a heroic death at the end of the first season, but it was an emotional one. At least she could come back as a ghost, but there were a lot of questions left unanswered. Sadly, we won’t get all of the answers, even if The Sandman does manage to find a way to include the characters.
