One thing we were disappointed to hear was that Will wouldn’t be back for Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 2. Josh Stewart shared that the days of playing the character were over.

Of course, this has fans worried. Is something going to happen to Will in the new season? The first season saw a health scare that turned out to be just a scare. Will doesn’t have cancer, and that offered us hope that we’d see more of Will and JJ’s relationship blossom.

Instead, we’re going to get less, and it’s not clear how. Could the series write Will out?

Where is Will when Criminal Minds: Evolution begins?

TVLine answered a fan question about this, sharing that in the first couple of episodes, Will is just busy with work. That makes sense. He is still in law enforcement, just like his wife. The two have lives outside of the house, and we hear a bit now and then about the cases that they work on.

It is possible that we just don’t go back to JJ’s house as much. The focus could be on the personal lives of other characters. JJ’s personal life has been a huge focus for some time, especially throughout the first season of the revival, and it could be time to look at someone like Alverez or even Prentiss. We also would love to see more of Tara Lewis, and we know that we should see more of Garcia’s personal life.

The fact that Will is away with work gives us some hope that he won’t end up being killed off. This is just for the first couple of episodes, though. There are 10 episodes in the season, and that does mean time for someone to go after the BAU on a personal level. Let’s hope that Will is left out of the firing line, giving the show a chance to right the wrong and bring him back for the third season.
