It’s the start of a new era of Law & Order as Tony Goldwyn debuts as the new DA. Get a peek at his first episode.
Law & Order took off the week on Thursday, March 7 due to NBC covering the State of the Union address. Thankfully, it was only a brief break as the show returns on Thursday, March 14, which will be a challenge as it goes up against ABC’s returning Thursday lineup.
But the main show returns in a big way as Tony Goldwyn will make his debut as Nicholas Baxter, the new DA. He takes over from Jack McCoy, who resigned to protect Price from political blowback on a case.
The Scandal star gets a nice showcase to kick off with a big case that gives Price and Maroun a chance to see their new boss in action.
Law & Order 23x07 promo
The promo for "Balance Of Power” shows the detectives investigating the murder of a Wall Street investor while also featuring the first glimpses of Baxter in action. That makes for a more compelling case than usual.
The promo has Price and Maroun talking about their new boss and how different he’ll be from McCoy. That Baxter has a different attitude can shift up the case as the cops and ADAs have to get used to a new guy in charge of their work.
Law & Order 23x07 synopsis
Apparently, Baxter gets his feet wet, showing up at the crime scene to the annoyance of the cops. Already having to deal with McCoy leaving, this much different attitude means that, like the characters, fans are in for a bold new boss on Law & Order.
"When a successful Wall Street investor is murdered in his home, Shaw and Riley dig into his professional and personal lives to identify his killer. DA Baxter puts pressure on Price and Maroun to make sure his first case in office is a success."
Tony Goldwyn talked to TV Insider, giving some backstory on Baxter. The man comes from a political family, formerly in private practice, and spent 15 years working for the Southern District U.S. Attorney’s office. This may lead to a new attitude toward his work.
"McCoy was a purist, following whatever the law said on a case-by-case basis. Baxter, who may have larger political ambitions, takes into account the social, political and longer-term systemic implications of a high-profile case. He looks at the public good as opposed to [only] the case’s narrow merits. For example, he takes into consideration the broader social impact of prostitution."
Law & Order Season 23 airs Thursdays at 8/7c on NBC and streams on Peacock the following day.
