2023 was a tricky year for new crime shows. There were several gems like Poker Face and Will Trent. There were also a few bad shows that passed on quickly, and the strikes hitting Hollywood put off several series for a while. But as 2024 dawns, some intriguing new crime shows are on the horizon.
Some are network while others are streaming, but all offer some good takes. There are cop stories, some mysteries, a bit of action, and even ones based on popular movies.
As 2024 begins, these 12 TV crime shows should keep fans entertained for the new year and make up for 2023’s disappointments.
Criminal Record
This new Apple TV+ series, Criminal Record, has a great hook to it. Peter Capaldi of Doctor Who fame is a veteran detective set to wrap up a storied career when a younger cop (Cash Jumbo) reopens one of his old cases. She claims the guy put in jail is innocent, and the conflict soon addresses issues of racial bias.
The series looks to be a thriller as Capaldi and Jumbo clash on the case, and it’s clear the elder detective is hiding something. Its mix of racial and class strife amid a dark murder investigation should make this a compelling watch.
Criminal Record premieres on Apple TV+ on Wednesday, Jan. 10.
The Brothers Sun
The reason to watch this new Netflix series can be summed up in two words: Michelle Yeoh. The Oscar-winning Hong Kong action legend is well-cast as the mother to a seemingly normal California resident who has to reveal the truth: Their family is one of the most powerful criminal gangs in Taiwan, and now rivals are coming after them.
The titular brothers are ill-matched, a normal guy and his trained killer sibling in a show promising to mix some wild martial arts action and thrills with Yeoh showing her stuff well and making it one of the best action crime shows of the coming year.
The Brothers Sun premieres on Netflix on Thrusday, Jan. 4.
