Update (4/18) Just a few short hours after the original publication of this piece, CBS has announced the renewal of Elsbeth for season 2.
If there was one new series we were looking forward to, it was Elsbeth. The Good Wife spin-off brought us a great series with a character we loved.
Then CBS announced the release schedule. The first episode arrived on Thursday, Feb. 29 and then we had a long wait for the second episode. It was certainly a questionable decision that had us a little worried about the renewal chances.
While the same-day linear ratings haven’t been all that strong, Deadline notes that the multi-platform viewing ratings have been good. This offers some good news for the renewal of the series.
Elsbeth could land a second season despite the linear ratings
CBS will want strong linear ratings, but this isn’t the only factor when it comes to renewing content. The streaming figures will also be considered, especially since Paramount+ is CBS’s own streaming platform. Those signing up to Paramount+ will put their money back into CBS’s pockets.
So, with good multi-viewing ratings, Elsbeth does stand a chance for a renewal. It just needs to find a better timeslot for linear viewing, in my opinion. The return of the show in the 9 p.m. ET/PT timeslot for one week made it clear that there are fans who want to watch but the 10 p.m. timeslot on a Thursday night isn’t a good one.
The series already has a fanbase
More good news for the series is that The Good Wife fanbase is already there. This is a series that brought a fan-favorite character to the lead, without her being too much of a running joke. The writers found a way to balance out her quirkiness with the other characters.
There’s also the “howdunit” formatting. This brings a different type of procedural format to the show, which could help keep it on the air for another season.
Elsbeth is a CBS Studios show
Another factor in its corner is the fact that Elsbeth comes from CBS Studios. This is a huge benefit for the network as it means the network has more control over streaming homes. A lot of licensed content doesn’t end up remaining in Paramount+ once the season is finished. We just have to look at some of the FBI shows. If a show is performing well in the delayed ratings, CBS will want to make sure those episodes are always available.
There is also less need for negotiations between the seasons. The cast and writer contracts are set up and the show can be renewed. There’s no need to deal with licensing fee negotiations.
We could see Elsbeth land a second season. Now we just have to wait for CBS to make a final decision.
Elsbeth airs Thursdays at 10/9c on CBS.
