Safe

I adore Michael C. Hall, so when I realized initially that I’d missed one of his shows, I kicked myself. Safe was the first of the Harlan Coben shows released in 2018. It follows Tom Delaney, a man who is shaken when his daughter Jenny goes missing. They live in a gated community, so how is that possible?

He goes on a deep dive to find her, all the while finally facing the loss of his wife before the series. This story brings much of what you would expect from Coben’s stories. We have the seedy nightclubs, the suspicious activity, and all the raging parties. They are certainly what you’d expect after getting into the likes of The Stranger and Stay Close.

This is one of those well-paced thrillers. It’s also one where the payoff is more than worth it on an emotional level. You can’t help but get invested.

Fool Me Once

The most recent of the adaptations, Fool Me Once, quickly became my favorite. It follows Maya, who’s husband died. When he turns up on the nanny cam, she starts to question her sanity. She also wants to figure out what’s going on. Why did her husband die? What happened to his brother years earlier? And what is going on with the Beckett family?

This is one of those shows that had a twist I didn’t see coming. I wanted to think I’d worked it out, but the ending brought me so much joy because it had me fooled. It also had an ending that was believable. It was the only option to bring closure, and that’s something the characters have to agree about.
