When Alec realized that Rose was missing, he pushed to find her in The Irrational season 2 premiere. The season certainly opened with a bang.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from The Irrational season 2, episode 1

The premiere episode had to pick up off the back of the season 1 finale. There was no doubt about it. However, instead of immediately jumping into where Rose was, we picked up with Alec realizing that Rose was gone.

She didn’t turn up to her date, and his messages to her weren’t being delivered. Where could she be? Maybe at her apartment? It didn’t take Alec long to realize that someone had been casing her apartment and someone took her. He needed Marissa and the FBI to help locate her.

Marissa stepped in to find Rose in The Irrational season 2 premiere

At first, Marissa questioned whether Rose was actually missing. Considering Rose’s job, Marissa’s thought process was reasonable. Alec didn’t even get annoyed that Marissa was questioning this. Instead, he broke down why he knew that something had happened, and Marissa immediately believed them. I hope we get more of their history and backstory throughout this season to see how they are such good friends despite being exes.

Marissa quickly got to work to locate Rose, and it didn’t take too long to figure it all out. Of course, it was linked to her MI6 past. A recent book being published had shared a few stories, and while names were changed, those involved would know the truth. That led to a guy realizing that Rose and an agent called Harry, who wrote the book, were the agents behind his wife’s death.

He wanted revenge, and that meant Rose needed to find a way to prevent that happening. It didn’t look like it was going to be possible when he killed Harry. Alec even had Rizwan do an experiment to see if people could be talked out of revenge. Well, it’s bad news. They can’t.

Alec does point out later in the episode that there is one way that has been proven to stop someone carrying out revenge. However, it takes days, and they didn’t have days. I do like that Alec was able to point out there could be an option if they had time.

Alec finds a way to get himself taken

Of course, when it comes to revenge, the best way is to take someone a person loves. So, it’s not surprising that Rose’s kidnapper is after people close to her. That includes Alec, who finds his way to find Rose. He allows himself to get taken.

That’s okay. Kylie is now working with the FBI, so she can track where he is. Alec just needs to buy him and Rose time, which he sort of does. As Rose takes the blame for the death of the wife, Alec points out that she’s lying. Eventually, the truth comes out. The wife was working with MI6 to turn over her cousins, but the mission failed slightly by leading to her death. Rose has always regretted that happening, and we get to see another layer to her character. She did care about operatives in the field. How could she not?

In the end, Marissa and the FBI get to the location, but it’s too late. Alec and Rose have been taken on the guy’s suicide mission. He’s going to blow up an MI6 building, taking himself, Rose, and Alec out at the same time. Alec tries to talk him out of this revenge, but all it does is stall things longer enough for the FBI to catch up to them and kill the abductor.

Is there hope for Rose and Alec after this in The Irrational season 2?

Rose leaves the hospital without telling Alec, so he heads to her apartment to see how she is. It’s clear that she feels guilty for getting Alec involved in her past. I’m just glad that the writers didn’t opt for the trope of Rose just running off and not explaining things to Alec. They had a conversation, even though it looked like it would lead to the end of their relationship at first.

Alec refuses to allow this to end, though. So Rose comes with a past. Everyone has baggage, and some of it is going to be scarier than other baggage. That doesn’t mean their relationship can’t continue. They don’t get to repeat their date because Rose has to leave for work, but there is some hope that the two will be able to pick things back up when she returns.

What’s going on with Phoebe?

Phoebe showed up at Alec’s lecture at the start of the episode, and it’s clear that she’s not really enjoying her new job. She felt like she needed to spread her wings, but I have a feeling that this new work isn’t exciting enough. I get a sense that we’ll find out that the new work isn’t exciting enough or that she doesn’t like the teaching method.

The grass isn’t greener on the other side.

The Irrational season 2 airs Tuesdays at 10/9c on NBC. Catch up the following day on Peacock.
