The Perfect Couple cast wasn't happy with the idea of that dance sequence

The Perfect Couple opens each episode with a strange dance number. What was the deal with it, and which cast member was the only one up for it?

Sometimes quirky dance numbers work, and sometimes they don’t. It’s the latter for The Perfect Couple, but we can skip the credits on this one.

Showrunner Samantha Bier decided that she wanted something a little like Wednesday. She knows how good dance numbers can be when they go viral, so she wanted something for The Perfect Couple. This led to the dance number to Meghan Trainor’s Criminal in the opening credits.

Bier wanted to show that the series can be fun, as there are some dark topics involved. It just hasn’t quite worked, and the viewers aren’t the only ones who think that. It turns out that cast didn’t really want to do it, either.

There was nearly a mutiny in The Perfect Couple

It turns out that the cast had their own WhatsApp chat to talk to each other about various parts of the show, according to Variety. Of course, the dance number came up.

Meghann Fahy, who plays Merritt in the series, shared that she doesn’t do well with choreography so was worried about it. Ishaan Khattar, who plays Scooter, shared that the cast just didn’t get the idea of the dance moment. It didn’t seem to fit in with the whole series.

It turns out that the dance number was originally going to be part of a dream sequence in Episode 5. That was scrapped and it was put as the opening credits instead.

There was only one cast member who was fully up for this, and that was Live Schreiber. He shared that he wasn’t in the WhatsApp group, so didn’t realize what was going on with the others. He just likes to dance, so he was practicing the moves. Maybe someone should get him on Dancing with the Stars!

Nicole Kidman did eventually come around to it. She shared that she was on the fence because it didn’t work for her character. Greer wouldn’t dance, so Kidman found a way to dance in the way Greer would, and that worked for her. She is glad that it was included, but that doesn’t mean she was fully on board with the idea at first.

Sometimes, dance numbers work. Yes, Wednesday and The Umbrella Academy are already so outlandish that they work for these shows. But The Perfect Couple? Sorry, it doesn’t quite fit.

The Perfect Couple is available to stream on Netflix.
