We’re getting closer to the return of our favorite TV crime dramas on broadcast. Many of them are back in September, and we can’t wait. It leaves a lot of people wondering what to watch as we get to that point.

The good news is streaming platforms have us covered. There are some great debuts in August, including one that is based on a popular book trilogy by Holly Jackson. Not sure what to watch? We have five great suggestions for crime dramas in August.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder

We start with a release that drops right at the start of the month. Thursday, Aug. 1 sees the release of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder, which is based on the novel of the same name by Holly Jackson. It follows Pip, who writes a paper about a local murder. She’s sure the man accused of murder, Sal, didn’t do it.

Teamed with Sal’s brother, she gets to the bottom of what happened the fateful night that a young girl went missing. However, it’s not an easy hunt, and it does lead to people close to her being hurt—and one member of the family being killed.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is coming to Netflix on Thursday, Aug. 1.

Daughters

This is a bit of an odd one compared to the types of shows we usually feature here. Daughters is a docuseries that follows the daughters of incarcerated men. They prepare for a special father-daughter dance, and we get to see what life is like for the young girls who have fathers on the inside.

A Washington D.C. jail has a special program for fatherhood for the men in there. Does this change the way these men look at the world and the crimes they committed?

Daughters is on Netflix on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Only Murders in the Building

Of course, the fourth season of Only Murders in the Building is one to watch. This one picks up off the back of the murder at the end of Season 3. Someone wanted Charles dead, but got his body double, played by Jane Lynch, instead. Who wants Charles dead and why?

At the same time, the trio will head to Hollywood. Their podcast is being turned into a movie, and there are some big names playing their parts. This is sure to add more mystery to the murder.

Only Murders in the Building Season 4 premieres on Hulu on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

The Killer

How about a thriller that involves an assassin? Nathalie Emmanuel from Game of Thrones takes the lead as a feared underground contract killer, known as the Queen of the Dead. When she’s sent an assignment, she goes through with all but one element of it. She allows a young girl to live.

Now the people who hired her need to kill the witness. They go about it their own way, and the Queen of the Dead will put her life on the line to keep the young woman safe. Why? That answer is complicated.

The Killer premieres on Peacock on Friday, Aug. 23.

Granite Harbour

Finally, it’s all about the British TV crime drama Granite Harbour, which returns for its second season. Lindo, Bart, and the rest of the police team have a new case. There have been two fatal cases, and one of them involves the death of Grace McFadden’s notorious fixer. The Major Investigations Team needs to deal with a new source of cocaine and ketamine on the streets while dealing with the secrets of the drug kingpin.

There are three episodes to the story. This season sees a new drugs-turf war building, but can MIT get to the bottom of it before it explodes?

Granite Harbour Season 2 is on BritBox on Thursday, Aug. 15.
