What was the German Einstein series about (and how will the U.S. version differ)?
Matthew Gray Gubler has landed his own pilot. He’ll play the lead in Einstein, a series based on a German dramedy of the same name.
In the U.S. version, Gubler will play Lew, Einstein’s great-grandson who feels the weight of that lineage. Is this who the character is in the original version or are things already changing? It’s worth taking a look at the original show to get an idea of what we could expect.
Who does the German Einstein follow?
The German series follows Felix, played by Tom Beck, according to TVLine. He is the youngest professor to teach theoretical physics at his university. Is that because of his great-grandfather, Albert Einstein? He certainly feels the weight of that lineage, but he tries to form his own path.
It’s not easy, though. He is also dealing with a debilitating illness, Huntington’s disease. After stealing drugs to help manage his condition, he’s arrested and faces prison time. That is until Elena, played by Annika Ernst, offers him a get-out-of-jail-free card.
This detective has some complex cases that she can’t figure out. She needs a mind like Felix to help, and she offers him an opportunity. He can avoid jail by helping her. And so, it leads to the two of them solving crimes together.
How will the U.S. Einstein change?
There isn’t much in the way of change between the two shows, except for the reason Lew ends up arrested. It doesn’t sound like he has Huntington’s disease. Instead, he wants to escape his namesake, and that leads to him getting involved in some bad boy behavior.
When he’s arrested, he ends up with the same offer. He can face potential jail, or he can help the detective with her most complex cases. Take a wild guess at while one he chooses. There wouldn’t be a series if he chose jail.
