When there’s a new character joining a series, there are always questions about whether they’ll be friend and foe. Shawn Hatosy is joining Chicago PD Season 12, but who will he play, and will he become a problem?

TV Insider got the details of the casting. Hatosy will join Chicago PD Season 12 in a recurring role. He’ll be Deputy Chief Charlie Reid, and his first episode is going to be the Season 12 premiere. That premiere is still set to air on Wednesday, Sept. 25 despite the potential date being used for a Presidential Debate.

Is Charlie Reid friend or foe in Chicago PD Season 12?

A new Deputy Chief can often mean that there’s trouble on the horizon for Intelligence. After all, new people come into power and they tend to want to change the way things are done. Or they have a problem with a specific member of the team.

Well, the good news is that Charlie Reid isn’t going to be a problem for the team in Chicago PD Season 12. Instead, he could end up being a buddy to Voight, as the two are very similar in nature. Reid sees a lot of himself in Voight, according to showrunner Gwen Sigan, and that leads to the two connecting with each other.

Of course, relationships evolve. Reid may come across as a problem at first. Then he may start to warm up to the team and the way Voight does things.

Can Charlie Reid help Voight in Chicago PD?

Things are going to have to change for Voight in the new season. Throughout Season 11, he dealt with the case of a serial killer, and that case nearly led to the loss of his own life. As he hallucinated due to blood loss, he realized that he may not be the best for his team. He didn’t want any of the team to put their lives at risk, so he refused to call in the way the serial killer wanted him to.

Eventually, Upton did turn up to save him. The end of the season saw Voight question whether he was bad for Upton. Had he steered her down the wrong path? The two had a heart to heart before Voight encouraged Upton to seek new pastures.

Voight needs to go through a change after all of that. Maybe Reid can be the one to see that Voight is struggling after it all and be a voice of reason for him.

Chicago PD Season 12 premieres on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 10/9c on NBC.
